TSV Bayer Dormagen – Bergischer HC 26-35 (11-20)

On 24th February 2025, I traveled to my second handball match of the season. The TSV Bayer Sportcenter featured a very interesting match of the 2nd Bundesliga on that day. TSV Bayer Dormagen hosted the Bergischer HC. The distance between the two cities, Dormagen near Cologne and Solingen or Wuppertal, the two home cities of the guests, was rather short, so that the match was definitely some sort of regional derby. I was really looking forward to this Monday evening match, in which the guests as league leader came in the position of the favorite team.

TSV Bayer Dormagen – Bergischer HC – Match Report

1,931 spectators saw this 2nd Handball Bundesliga battle, with an unsurprisingly strong away support for the guest team. Both teams struggled to score initially, so that it rather looked like a low-scoring match after five minutes, when the board showed a 1-2 count. However, some turnovers, a good defense around Christopher Rudeck and a better adjusted offense let Bergischer HC more and more march away from their opponents. Four minutes later, Noah Beyer scored the 1-6 goal and forced the hosts to take their first time out. However, this readjustment by Bayer Dormagen did not really change their faith in the first half of the match. The scoring gap between the teams increased more and more and was already seven goals (3-10) after fifteen minutes. In this part of the match, Dormagen neither got a grip on their opponents on the defensive nor on the offensive side. They did do better in the second part of the period, but the goal difference stayed rather constant around seven to eight goals. In the last minutes before the intermission, Bergischer HC even made it to increase the lead to ten goals. However, with one second left to play, Finn Schroven scored the 11-20 intermission score goal for the hosts.

Dormagen got around better in the second period

The hosts definitely had some good readjustments and at least kept the gap to the league leader rather constant for most of the second period. This was mentally pleasing, but of course not that satisfactory due to the burden emerging from the first thirty minutes of the match. The distance was rather constant around ten to eleven goals for quite some time, so that the guest fans had a very relaxed and pleasing evening at TSV Bayer Sportcenter. In the second part of the second half, Dormagen managed to close up a bit. Luca Krist’s goal in the 18th minute, the third Dormagen goal in a row, closed the gap to seven goals (21-28) and gave a tiny hope for a comeback. But Bergischer HC acted very solid and never allowed their rivals any more being closer than that in the remaining game. Finally, they sealed the away victory with a final score of 26-35. Best scorers of each team were Sören Steinhaus (6 goals) and Eloy Morante Maldonado (11).

TSV Bayer Dormagen – Bergischer HC – My View of the Match

Even though TSV Bayer Dormagen was definitely in the underdog situation for this match, they will struggle with that one. Just having scored four times in the first 16 minutes of the match is as unpleasing as allowing 20 goals in the first period. Especially in parts of the second period, the host underlined that they could have been more competitive in this Monday evening match. On the other hand, Bergischer HC confidentially saved the league lead, strengthening their ambition to come back to Handball Bundesliga next season. Thus, they definitely deserved partying with their fans after the match.
