Food I Had Onboard XXVI (September / October 2025)

My September 2025 edition of the Food I Had Onboard already starts with some experiences in late August. Again, there is a wide mixture of inflight and in-train service and food experiences listed in here. This episode is a bit smaller, but there will be a packed November post. Enjoy!

29th August 2025, Deutsche Bahn ICE 614, Cologne – Hamburg, First Class

I did not have a bite before entering the train to Hamburg. Thus I went for an early lunch in the train. I was really keen to try out one of their seasonal meals, the Chicken Tikka Masala (14.90 EUR). I also took a Jokolade (raspberry chocolate bar, 3.20 EUR). Ordering via in-train WiFi went really smooth and I was absolutely amazed about how fast the service was. The spicy curry was really nice. The chocolate bar served as a dessert, so that I felt much better thereafter. I also had drinks, for which I used drink vouchers.

30th August 2025, Deutsche Bahn ICE 519, Hamburg – Cologne, First Class

Heading back from the Midland show, I had the opportunity to convert my very last drink voucher onboard Deutsche Bahn – the first time I feel that I indeed managed that. To the Aperol Spritz alike drink, I tried their Egg Drop Sandwich – two thick slices of toast with an egg patty, a lot of cheddar and some turkey bacon. Sounds and looks rather basic, but it is really a nice one for a rail trip. The service was slower and not as friendly than on the day before – but still in a very nice range.

20th September 2025, Condor DE 1848, Dusseldorf (DUS) – Palma (PMI), Business Class

I was scheduled for a very special weekend flying to and from Mallorca. For the way to the Spanish islands, I chose Condor in their A320 Business Class – a first time experience for me. While the typical meal on that early morning flight would have been a breakfast service, I had pre-ordered a roast beef with potato gratin and veggies. Not the typical kind of food at 8:00 in the morning, but really delicious. I also liked the crew, who was very friendly and active in regards of the drink services. There was also a pre-meal welcome drink (champagne or orange juice) and some chocolates before landing. By the way, the box in the picture contained a small muffin and a macaron. Very good performance by the “other” Germans.

21st September 2025, Discover 4Y 513, Palma (PMI) – Frankfurt (FRA), Business Class

I was originally scheduled to fly shared private jet with Travelcoup, but they had to cancel their flight very short notice (Saturday afternoon), as their second plane still does not have an AOC. At least, I had an interesting rebooking, Discover on their A330 Business Class. The crew was absolutely nice, especially the purser was very charming. The crew skipped me for the pre-flight champagne (as I was on the loo, had some medical issues during the flight), but I still enjoyed the service. There was a choice of two mains I went for the BBQ style short rib (which was indeed a single piece of meat) with creamy corn and fried polenta. The vegetarian alternative would have been a braised oven carrot with sweet potato, celery salad and salsa verde. The main was really good, which the eggplant cream with chickpea salad, tomato and zucchini as a starter and the matcha tiramisu with poached peer and almond crumble felt rather average to me. Still a really nice flight experience in the old Lufthansa cabin.

3rd October 2025, SAS SK 620 (operated by Cityjet), Dusseldorf (DUS) – Copenhagen (CPH), SAS Plus

The first leg of my trip to the Faroe Islands was the morning service to Copenhagen (CPH) by Cityjet. With my body size, having a neighbor in SAS Plus in the Canadair cabin is quite a nightmare. However, the crew was friendly and as attentive as you can expect on a short flight like that. The food was a typical SAS breakfast box, made to built your own sandwich. Unfortunately, I missed to take some pictures of it.

3rd October 2025, SAS SK 1777, Copenhagen (CPH) – Faroe Islands (FAE), SAS Plus

Like on the first leg, I spent most of the time sleeping. However, I always wake up for food, so I could at least check that out. The gap between food and drinks was a bit long, but overall, it was a really nice SAS crew. In summertime, this more and more feels like the most suitable connection from Germany to my beloved islands.

11th October 2025, Atlantic Airways RC 456, Faroe Islands (FAE) – Copenhagen (CPH), Economy Class

I booked the return in a way that I at least have one Atlantic Airways flight. I pre-booked their open sandwiches (not available for sale otherwise), which were not as good as in Torshavn, but still a treat. The crew was a bit of strange, as they gave free food and drinks to some passengers. Before landing, the cabin check was also rather below expectation, including a backpack in the first row. Nonetheless, the experience with the Faroese was fine.

12th October 2025, SAS SK 1621, Copenhagen (CPH) – Dusseldorf (DUS), SAS Plus

After a night in Malmö, I headed on back home. I was expecting one of these lunch boxes and have been surprised by a “proper” menu in SAS Plus. The meal was a beetroot tzatziki with dill oil, a smorrebrod with grilled chicken and a San Sebastian cheesecake with mango coulis – overall, a very delicious meal for the short trip in the Canadair. A good crew performance by the Nordics as well.

18th October 2025, KLM KL 1796 (operated by German Airways), Dusseldorf (DUS) – Amsterdam (AMS), Economy Class

KLM and German Airways really seemed to have issues with that flight. The morning service to Amsterdam (AMS) has been cancelled twice the days before. Thus, a very late boarding and an initially announced delay due a slot time / landing restriction in Amsterdam due to capacity limits with a more than 90 minutes delay almost felt like a treat. The crew handled that well and handed out water. In fact, the flight had a some 50 minute delay at departure, 30 min at landing.

The snack was the typical breakfast coconut cookie. Not too bad, even though that one felt like it was not warmed up correctly after being taken from the freeze – it felt really sticky. Overall, a solid performance by the Germans.

18th October 2025, KLM KL 1031, Amsterdam (AMS) – Manchester (MAN), Economy Class

The rather packed A321neo service to Manchester (MAN) had a bit of a delay as well, but nothing really serious. Boarding took a while and the crew was very nice and motivated. This flight still was a cookie flight, no cheese sandwich, as I expected in economy class. I did not take a picture of it. Therefor, there was a wider selection of drinks, which I appreciated. A really nice performance by KLM here – no picture as it was the same food as before (just being served much nicer…).

19th October 2025, Eurowings EW 9345, Manchester (MAN) – Dusseldorf (DUS), BizClass

For the return flight to Dusseldorf (DUS), my wife and I used the Eurowings Sunday evening service. I like the concept of being able to choose from their menu whatever you like. As a drink, I went for the lemon-mint lemonade, which is amazing. The pretzel stick sandwich with cream cheese was definitely below the quality Eurowings  did deliver in the past. The small Pringles box is a nice treat. Even though the service started a bit of slow and you could learn a bit too much about the relationship issues of the crew members when sitting in the first row, I really liked the service performance as well.
