I hate when I simply don’t make it to fit in reviews in time. This review, for example, is based on the Icelandic Ring Road Trip my wife and I took in May 2023. For the third night of our journey, we were looking for a place to sleep close to Egilsstadir in the East of Iceland. We finally opted for a hotel, which is a bit of outside of the city, but stroke with great reviews and promised a memorable night. Here is my review of the Hotel 1001 Nott (which translates to “1001 Nights”).

 

Hotel 1001 Nott – Location

The hotel is located some six kilometers South of Egilsstadir. Thus, it is not suitable for people using public transport like the Ring Road bus services. Touristic facilities like restaurants, grocery stores or gas stations can be found in the city, though. The hotel is located very close to the Lagarfljot lake. Egilsstadir Airport (EGS) is close to the city and thus some seven kilometers away from the hotel.

In order to reach the hotel, you have to take route 95 Southbound from Egilsstadir and then turn right into a paved gravel road. There is a sign pointing into the direction of travel. You do not need a special car like a 4WD to get there. The hotel rooms have their entrance through the window front facing in the direction of the lake. The walk there is on gravel. However, the hotel offers a golf cart service for your luggage, which was very convenient. There is obviously sufficient parking right at the hotel.

 

Hotel 1001 Nott – Room

We had a twin room with lake view for one night, Monday to Tuesday, in May 2023. The rate of the room was 216 EUR. The room came with a typical Nordic design, but felt rather modern. There was sufficient space for our luggage and also to work in the room. The key feature of the room was, of course, the lovely view from the bed and the seating over the lake and the East Icelandic mountains. The area is very quiet, so that there are no privacy issues.

The bathroom is located in the rear of the room. This also means that you don’t have to close the curtains, for example, when you go to the toilet. In line with the hotel room, the bathroom with shower was very functional. The cleaning of the room was very good. Overall, our room felt rather new and well maintained or renovated.

 

Hotel 1001 Nott – Breakfast

The breakfast room is located close to the reception wing of the building. Similar to the rooms, it offers a lovely view of the area. Egg dishes were made on demand, while the remaining breakfast was a buffet. The selection was reasonable. There could have been a bit more on the bread and cold cut side – but finally, the place does just come with a couple of rooms. Furthermore, Icelandic breakfast are typically not that posh. I absolutely enjoyed our kick-off of the fourth travel day of our trip.

 

Hotel 1001 Nott – Service

Not only due to the golf cart service I already mentioned, the staff was really amazing. The processes went very smooth. You might expect a weaker internet connection at that location, but the connection was really good. A lovely feature of the hotel are two hot tubs, which are closer to the lake. It was amazing to finish a long day of driving just by sitting and relaxing in the tub and enjoying nature. On demand, Hotel 1001 Nott also offers bathrobes for a more convenient stay.

 

Hotel 1001 Nott – My View

The location and the view from Hotel 1001 is simply striking. It is nicely located in the Icelandic nature, even though it is close to the city. Thus, it is also very suitable as a hub for trips and travels in East Iceland. The amazing staff and relaxing in the hot tub gave additional arguments to recommend this place if you look for a hotel in the area.
