Radio City Music Hall – if you played a show as an artist in this iconic place in the heart of New York City, you definitely made it. I did not have the opportunity of watching a show there during my stay in late March 2024, but at least, I was able to visit this famous venue on a tour. Here are my thoughts and impressions of the Radio City Music Hall Tour.

Radio City Music Hall – Location & Tour Admission

Radio City Music Hall is located in Manhattan at 6th Avenue, between 50th St and 51st St. It is part of Rockefeller Center with the Top of the Rock Observation Deck and next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The main entrance to the venue is at 6th Ave, the tour, however, starts on the Northern entrance at 51st St. The signs there are a bit limited, I happened to come from the South during my visit and it took me quite a while to find it. The closest NY Subway stations are 5th Ave / 53 St (lines E and M) and 7 Av (lines B, D, E).

Public tours of Radio City Music Hall are typically offered daily, there are just very few exceptions. The roughly 60 minute tour is offered between 10:00 and 15:00. Adult admission is 33 USD at the box office of Radio City Music Hall or Madison Square Garden. Online purchases are possible, but they are subject to comparably high fees. The Radio City Music Hall Tour is also included in typical New York Sightseeing Passes. You need to change your pass to a tour at the tour entrance. The tour pass includes a discount on the gift shop.

Radio City Music Hall – The Tour

The tour starts at the posh main hall, named Grand Foyer. The 1932-opened traditional venue is amazing at that place. Even the carpet has references to the different arts represented there. The rich ornaments and the two tubular chandeliers are additional eye-catchers. From there, the tour went on to the auditorium. Radio City Music Hall has a capacity of some 6,000 people. We were lucky that there was no stage production on that evening, so that we could also step on stage and explore the amazing view from there, as well as having a look and the technology which is allowing to lift and lower parts of the stage. This hydraulic system was so innovative that the US Navy also used it for their aircraft carriers during WWII.

Downstairs – and Upstairs

The next stage of the tour was the main lobby, which is in fact located in the basement of the venue. The very black-ish design feels like quite a contrast to the Grand Foyer, but it is also still very stylish and feels luxurious. There are also some sculptures in the area. At that point, by the way, you also have the opportunity for a loo break (which is some sort of sightseeing as well). After being at the bottom of the Radio City Music Hall, you more and more head upstairs, passing a lot of pictures from shows hosted in the place as well as original costumes. At that point, there were two highlights of the tour. First of all, you were able to meet one of the dancers of Radio City Music Hall, the Rockettes. Especially during their traditional Christmas Spectacular show, these ladies do an amazing job, with up to five daily shows.

The last stop of the tour was the Roxy Suite, the VIP room of the venue, where you can also have a look into the guest book. You also have a view of the auditorium from the very top of it, before heading back to the Grand Foyer.

Radio City Music Hall Tour – Services

The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a great tour. He was also very open to questions, which could all be answered. Thus, I overall really enjoyed the tour. One thing I really liked was that you could also take a picture with the Rockettes member with your own equipment, i.e. there was no charge for the picture. The tour ends at its starting point. There is also a small gift shop. I liked some of the items. However, the prices were simply too ridiculous in my point of view.

Radio City Music Hall Tour – My View

Radio City Music Hall is an iconic venue. The tour definitely raised my appetite to have a show there one day. The traditional atmosphere created almost a century ago still is very charming and feels magical. Not just for music and show lovers, this place definitely deserves a spot on your New York bucket list.
