The world of spies and espionage is a hidden, but fascinating topic for many people. Spyscape in New York City is pleasing that demand of interest. It is an interactive museum, which is informative and educative, but also interactive. Finally, you can even learn, which kind of spy you might become. The concept feels being successful – they even have an outlet in London nowadays. I visited the place in April 2024. Here is my review.

Spyscape – Location & Admission

Spyscape New York is located at the corner of 55th St and 8th Ave, not too far away from the Broadway. From Times Square, it is 13 streets away and close to the Southern part of Central Park.  Thus, it is a bit away, but in walking distance from the key tourist attractions. The closest NY Subway station is 57 St – 7 Ev, served by the N, Q, R and W line. Alternatively, you can use E, B, and D line to 7 Av.

Spyscape New York is opening daily from 10:00 to 20:00. You can buy time slot tickets online for 59 USD / 64.24 USD (2025 price, i.e. a 10 USD increase compared to my visit). A weird thing is that you cannot reserve single tickets. However, during my visit, you could just walk in. The museum also accepts the NY Sightseeing Pass. My visiting time was roughly 90 minutes.

Spyscape – The Visit

After entering the museum, you receive a bracelet and have to check in at one of the machines provided for that. The bracelet records your progress through the museum. Illuminated strips tell you the designated way through the exhibition (you may break it, if you are more individual, though). It may take a bit until an elevator takes you to the main exhibition. The museum is split into different sections, which always feature exhibits and pictures, but also interactive parts. For most of them, you scan your bracelet and your progress finally determines your rating. For example, in the first area about Encryption, you need to encrypt and decrypt messages, but you can also try out a replica of the German Enigma (they have an original one as well).

Spyscape is split into different sections. Some interactive parts are separate to that. The Spy Challenge checks out your reaction and agility. Overall, the museum illustrates a wide range of topics and is very illustrative. The interactive parts are really fun, so that you have a good time. At the end of your visit, you are classified into different roles, based on the talents you illustrated in the interactive games. You can even take a pen or a bracelet with that role with you (for free).

Spyscape – Services

There are also additional physical challenges like the new SpyGames, which I did not visit, majorly because the lines were too long. Spyscape New York also drives a very interesting souvenir and book store, when you want to take some memories with you or want to dig deeper into the topic. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Spyscape New York – My View

Spyscape New York is expansive, but it is a lot of fun. The balance of information and entertainment is nice. Places like the German Spy Museum in Berlin, might be more detailed, but the overall package turns Spyscape to a place worth visiting. It is also suitable for families.
