  • Beautiful storytelling
  • Lovely fingerstyle guitar skills
  • Very personal album

I does not happen too often that I set up a new edition for my Songs of the Week and decide that I have to add an artist to my tour date overview. Exactly that was what I did in when I worked on my 9th August edition of the new release radar. The song Stars by Sophie Chassee was just too good. On 6th September 2024, she released her full album, including that song. Here is my review of Attachment Theory.

Sophie Chassee – About The Artist

Sophie Chassee (who is correctly spelled Sophie Chassée – but I don’t go for accents typically) is an artist from the West part of Germany. Her family had a couple of musicians already. She tought herself playing the guitar at the age of eleven. She is doing pop songs based on her fingerstyle guitar play. Attachment Theory is her fourth studio album. In parallel to her solo career, she is also the bassist of the German band AnnenMayKantereit.

Sophie Chassee – Attachment Theory – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 38 minutes.

1. What Fathers Do

Sophie Chassee release this song the day right before the album release. Is this what fathers do? is the initial question of the album – and Chassee adds I guess I’ll never know. A dramatic and somehow sad song at the beginning of her Attachment Theory, which is majorly about weird, broken and bad relationships.

2. Stars

I selected Stars for my Songs of the Week – so I guess it is not too surprising I really like this track. A very catching, melodic singer-songwriter track, based on good and straight storytelling.

3. Dear Marie

Dear Marie is one of the longest songs of the album. It beautifully transports the sadness and melancholy of the story of song. This leads to an amazing, personal style of the track. After three track, I already feel that Attachment Theory may be a great listen.

4. User Not Found

The combination of fingerstyle guitar play and the warm, emotional voice of the artist leads to an almost magical connection. Songs like the slow User Not Found, which is also working with some backing instruments (like piano, strongs and drums) lead to an amazing listen. Lyrics like Now the right side of the bed is empty or you broke me, crushed me almost completely underline a strong personal and intimate touch of the song.  Love it!

5. Bury You Alive

After the first songs were rather slow, Bury You Alive has a rhythmic and also somehow angry style. This leads to a strong pop touch, which is supported by other electronic backing add-ons. The lyrics are almost spoken. The song shows a very different kind of Sophie Chassee’s work – and it works out beautifully.

6. Don’t Give A F***

The F-word in the title leads to one of two Explicit Lyrics markings on Spotify for the album. The song is an angry story about a split, leading to the key phrase I don’t give a fuck about you. Thereby, it follows a rather pop-ish style. The gentle, emotional style of the stanzas compared to the chorus leads to a nice contrast within the song. Great storytelling.

7. What I’m Not

The seventh song comes with a dreaming touch and many filling vocal parts. The song has a nice accentuated style in later parts of the song, which comes with a beautiful flow. I really like it.

8. The Last Journey of the Wren

The Last Journey of the Wren is the longest track on Attachment Theory. It starts with a long guitar intro, even the rhythmic part of the fingerstyle play is joining just after 40 seconds of this purely instrumental play. A nice way to have a spotlight on the excellent guitar skills of the artist.

9. Memories of You

Right after the longest song of the album, there is the shortest one, Memories of You. A beautiful (and again: sad) ballad, which is even more touching if you give your full attention to it – and listen to its story. A striking fact about the song is also its beautiful, very fitting atmosphere.

10. Fleeting

The 4:19 minute track Fleeting closes the Attachment Theory. The song is a rather uptempo and melodic one, which also leaves sufficient space for the beautiful fingerstyle guitar play of Sophie Chassee. Nice finale.
