Getting a hotel in or around Mönchengladbach should typically be not too much of an issue. However, when I wanted to ease my time at the German Under 18 / Under 23 Athletics Nationals 2024 there, there was a soccer match in parallel. I finally ended up having a reasonable deal for the ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich. Here is the review of my stay.

ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich – Location

Willich is a town of some 50k inhabitants. It is located Northeast of Mönchengladbach and West of Düsseldorf. The hotel is located in a commercial area right next to the A44 motorway. The direct surrounding majorly consists of major stores and companies. However, there is a gas station with a small shop in walking distance. Some grocery stores and basic restaurants, including a McDonald’s, are in short driving distance.

You can reach the hotel by public bus. Lines 056 and 071 serve the Wil. H.-Martin-Schleyer-Str. and connect to key locations in the area. However, the hotel is much more made for people coming by car. It drives a major, complimentary parking lot. Especially the proximity to the A44 motorway is very attractive. Driving distance to Dusseldorf Airport, for example, is some 20km / 15 min.

ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich – Room

I had booked the hotel for two nights. The flexible price, including breakfast in early July 2024, Friday to Sunday, was 164 EUR. The price was comparably high due to the UEFA soccer EURO 2024 and a match held in Dusseldorf. I did book a twin room, which i a new room concept I was very curious about. Unfortunately, I got a room with the “traditional” room layout with a bunk bed. The room was located on the third floor. The ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich does not have an elevator, so that the location was a bit of bothering, traveling with all the camera gear and technical equipment.

The size and layout of the room was quite nice, though. I also had sufficient space to store my luggage. The work desk was sufficiently large for my reason. The room also came with a sufficient number of power outlets. The sink is in the living / sleeping area, with a shower and a toilet in separate sections. The whole room was well serviced and absolutely clean.

ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich – Breakfast

Breakfast at the ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich is rather basic. The breakfast room is small. Despite the sports event in parallel, the small room had sufficient capacity. At nice weather, you might even use some of their outdoor seats. Even though selection was a bit of limited, the quality of the items was rather good. Additionally, the staff was really motivated to help people with dietary needs.

ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich – Service

The staff in the hotel was absolutely nice and friendly. WiFi in the hotel worked very well, too. There are no features like a gym in this class of hotel. However, there are some vending machines in the lobby. Check-in outside reception times can be done with a check in machine.

I had a good time at the ibis budget Düsseldorf Willich. I was a bit disappointed that I did not receive the room category I booked / expected, just due to my curiosity about this room concept. The room I got was absolutely fine as well. It is very easy to miss that a hotel does not have – in my case, I have been bothered that I missed that there is no elevator in the hotel. You should definitely know that in case you expect heavier luggage or have mobility limiattions.
