Hall of Fame Open 2024 – Men’s Singles Final: A. Michelsen (USA) – M. Giron (USA) 7-6(4) 3-6 5-7

The men’s singles final, held on 21st July 2024 at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open in Newport, was a purely domestic one. Alex Michelsen, who had rolled over Reilly Opelka in the semis, faced Marcos Giron, whom I saw in the Round of 16 match against Benoit Paire. The third-seeded player faced the second-seeded one – truly an interesting match-up at the end of the tournament.

Infosys Hall of Fame Open – Men’s Singles Final – Match Report

Giron, part of the Paris 2024 Olympic squad, felt to have the perfect start into the match. At the end of a seven minute first game battle, he broke Michelsen in the very first game of the match. It took a few games, until Michelsen felt to be really into the battle – but once he did so, he did it in style. Giron could not connect to his convincing performance at the beginning of the duel, and his opponent made use of that. He reverted the break advantage in the sixth game and felt being slightly better. Especially in the eighth game, when Giron had to face a 0-40 situation, Michelsen had the big chance to win the first set. However, he could not keep up the pressure and Giron surivived with an ace after two deuce situations. The set still featured some real thrillers. In a sixteen minute long eleventh game, Michelsen saved two break points overall, went four times through deuce, but survived. The set was decided by the tie-breaker, in which the nominal (slight) underdog had the better momentum. After already leading 5-1, he cruised to a tie-break win with a score of 7-4.

Giron was under pressure now – and again, it was a situation early in the set, which gave an early momentum. After Giron saved two break points and finally won the third game, he broke his opponent right thereafter. The games thereafter were mostly tight. Especially, the eighth game, in which Giron already had three set points against Michelsen’s serve, could have been the decider already. However, Giron failed in that opportunity but served for the set – and again finished the job with an ace.

 

Thriller at the End of the Newport Tournament

Thus, the tournament title had to be decided in the third set. Both servers faced crucial situations in the first games, but could survive.  Remarkably, Michelsen even had a match point, when Giron faced a 30-40 at own serve in the tenth game. However, it was again an ace in a crucial situation, which relaxed the pressure. The score was 5-5 and the Newport crowd already mentally prepared for a title-deciding tie-break. However, two games were left until that – and Michelsen failed to fulfill his duties at own serve. While he could survive at 15-40 in the eleventh game, he had to face another break point right after deuce. This time, Girron was superior and was serving for the set now. Needless to state how he ended the match: His 13th ace overall (Michelsen did not have a single one in the whole match) made him being awarded with the bigger trophy and the more valuable price money check.
