German Athletics Nationals 2024 – Day 2 Track (30th June 2024)

After the first day of the German Athletics Nationals 2024 in Braunschweig had been really warm and sunny, there were two challenges for the Sunday events: First of all, there were a lot of finals and athletes competing for personal bests and German champions. Secondly, there was a severe weather alert for the area around noon. Thus, you might become soaking wet on your way to a golden medal. Here is my Sunday coverage of the track events.

This posting comes with 622 major size pictures in a dedicated event section of the sports gallery.

German Athletics Nationals 2024 – Day 2 Track Events

The track events started with middle distance Under 20 relays. Königsteiner EV finally had a 16 second lead in front of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, winning the 3x800m U20 Women Relay in 6:37.62 minutes in a single heat. Vanda Skupin-Alfa, Sarah Köcher and Jana Marie Becker became German champions. On the 3x1000m U20 Men Relay side, LG Stadtwerke Munich was the winner after two timed heats, beating LC Paderborn by just three hundredth of a second. Moritz Gutowski, Moritz Mühlpointner and Tobias Tent were the happy winners for the Southern Germans.

Relays were in focus at the beginning of the track Sunday. the next decision were the 4x100m relays, held for men and women in three timed heats. SCC Berlin won the first women’s heat in 44.07 seconds, but LG Stadtwerke Munich had the better time when they passed the finished line in the third heat (43.92 sec). The victorious quartet was Melanie Slotosch, Amelie-Sophie Lederer, Svenja Pfetsch and Tina Benzinger. On the men’s side, LT DSHS Cologne 1 won the first heat (40.58 sec). Despite right thereafter, heaver showers incepted which also lead to delays in the schedule, the second and third heat were both quicker, with Hamburger SV 1 finishing in the fastest time of the day (39.65 seconds). Paul Erdle, Lucas Anash-Peprah, Matti Wellm and Owen Ansah became German champions.

Ninth German Championship for Christina Hering

After a bit of a break on the track (and still heavy showers in Braunschweig), the first individual race finals took place. With a time of 2:02.70, Christina Hering (LG Stadtwerke Munich) took her ninth German championship title over the 800m distance. The corresponding men’s race followed right thereafter, with Robert Farken (SC DHfK Leipzig, 1:48.90 min) left quite a gap to second-placed Luis Overbeck (LG Göttingen).

Thereafter, the track was busy with the 200m semifinals. There have been two heats each for men and women. VfL Sindelfingen’s Jessica-Bianca Wessolly pushed herself into the favorite position with the best time of the semifinals, 23.33 seconds. Her male counterpart was Deniz Almas (VfL Wolfsburg), who was the quickest in the Braunschweig rain with 21.09 seconds. I did not feature the finals at the end of the day any more, where Wessoly confirmed her role as the winner on the women’s side (23.18 seconds). Almas withdrew from the final race. TSV Bayer Leverkusen’s Eddie Reddemann won the finals with a time of 21.30 seconds.

The Stadium Laps

Thereafter, the track featured the one lap races. First, the 400m hurdles took place. Favorite Carolina Krafzik diid not start in the women’s final. Eileen Demes (TV Neu-Isenburg) had an impressive victory there. With a time of 56.53 seconds, she was almost two seconds faster than second-placed Djamila Böhm (SCC Berlin). Men’s winner Emil Agyekum (SCC Berlin, 49.25 sec) had to fight harder for the central spot on the winner’s podium.

After being the fastest in the semifinals on Saturday, SCC Berlin’s Alica Schmidt was in the favorite role for the 400m race on the women side. However, she could not confirm that time and finished third. Her teammate Skadi Schier became German champion with a time of 52.36 seconds, Mona Mayer (LG Telis Finanz Regensburg) finished second (52.55 sec). Jean Paul Bredau (SC Potsdam) was the fastest runner on the men’s stadium lap. He won with a time of 45.67 seconds.

Sommer Sacrifices Herself in the 1500 Meters

Apart from the closing 200m finals, the track competitions closed with some longer distance races. The women’s 1500m race was quite remarkable. Instead of a typical slower, tactical championship race, Svenja Sommer (Eintracht Frankfurt) sacrificed herself and increased the pace from the very beginning, As expected, she could not keep up the speed for longer than two laps and finally ended up eleventh. Sommer’s training partner Nele Weßel (TV Waldstraße Wiesbaden) and Vera Coutellier (ASV Cologne) profited from that, having a safe gap to the other racers until the finish line. Coutellier became German champion with a time of 4:12.60 minutes.

Thereafter, the men’s 1500m race took place. Robert Farken (SC DHfK Leipzig) won the sprint at the end (3:38.91 min), beating TV Wattenscheid’s Marius Probst by just five hundredths of a second. The closing long distance race was the women’s 3000m steeplechase  decision. Olivia Gürth (Silvesterlauf Trier) crossed the finish line first after 9:45.01 seconds.
