Higgs Chicks - Doomscrolling with Kurt
Flyctory.com Pros
- Very characteristic sound
- Smart arrangements
Country and blues, mixed with krautrock elements, made in Switzerland – that’s the Higgs Chicks. The debut album of the band comes with an iconic name – Doomscrolling with Kurt. Let’s see whether their 12th September 2025 release is indeed iconic, too.
Higgs Chicks – About The Artist
The Higgs Chicks are a country and alt-country duo from Schaffhausen in Switzerland. The two band members are Marc Zimmermann (typically guitars, bass, piano) and Beat Wipf (lead vocals, steel guitar). Zimmermann is originally from Hamburg. Both musicians have played in other bands before.
Higgs Chicks – Doomscrolling with Kurt – Track by Track
The twelve song album lasts 43 minutes.

1. Poor Little Elephant
The “alt” in alt-country is a already reflected in the title of the opener. There are rarely mainstream country tracks about elephants – and the Swiss duo is definitely not going for the mainstream. The rocking guitar theme, paired with the distorted vocals and the country swag from the remaining instrumentation is a cool combination, though.
2. Too Much Too Soon
In Too Much Too Soon, you also feel a clear influence by blues elements as well. The song has a cool groove, but also makes use of synth elements. Just when the song feels to become a bit of monotonous, the Swiss duo is changing the style and thus creates a very entertaining and fun listen. The song is definitely catching.
3. Long Way Home
The third song’s title already suggests that there might be some stronger country vibes in it. Indeed, the song has originally been released by Tom Waits in his 2002 Big Bad Love album. With some very typical Higgs Chicks musical elements and Wipf’s vocals, the song feels like a really enjoyable cover track.
4. I’m So Lonesome
Doomscrolling mit Kurt goes back in time much further and presents this track, which has been originally written by Hank Williams in the late 1940’s. This version goes for comparably traditional tunes and a slow speed. That’s indeed fitting to some prejudices towards Swiss people – and it does work well, too.
5. Secret Hobbies
The single release Secret Hobbies goes with the slow speed of the song before. However, there are more distortion elements in this rather brief track. We are back in the songwriting spheres of the duo, who is doing a really cool track here. Maybe some of the sounds are a bit too much to me. They almost give me some psychedelic feelings.
6. Doomscrolling Mit Kurt
Country with benefits – or at least some very untypical additional electronic and blues elements. The title track of the album is a multi-layered recording with a mixture of laid-back Americana elements and quite some additional melody lines, which feel to come from a very different sphere of music. The ending of Doomscrolling mit Kurt even feels a bit of scary.
7. Würmchen
Wir-wir sind alle kleine Würmchen (“We-we are all small worms”) – these are the opening words of this already released songs. There is just a slight flavor of Americana elements. The Swiss duo is this time rather going for very presents synth and elements. The main theme is tootling in the background and thus adds some and fun to the song. As you likely already guessed, this one is presented in German. The almost five minute tracks follows a very intense, increasing plot.
8. Artists Blues
The just slightly longer than two minutes Artists Blues comes with a typical repetitive blues structure. This also means that the song does not send a too complex message. However, the song is not that bad.
9. 1 Bis 10
Just four more songs left – and this one (“1 To 10”) is the last song on the record which has already been shared beforehand. The song, which is again sung in German, feels rather melancholic. Especially the streel guitar sounds in the background add a lot to the feelings of the song.
10. Nothing
The credits of the next two songs don’t show the Higgs Chicks members again. This song was originally recorded by the US-American alt-country icon Townes Van Zandt, who died in 1997. The relatable, slightly painful vocal track of the song makes you listen and reflect
11. Tennessee Stud
Johnny Cash made this song famous, when it appeared on his 1994 Black In Black album. You can feel the spirit of the country music legend. Nonetheless, the song does not feel cheap or flat. Thus, it adds some nice, heartwarming touch to this one.
12. Wünschelfuchs
The longest song of Doomscrolling mit Kurt closes the album. The song has very intense and thrilling plot. Especially the marching drums create an intense atmosphere. This one definitely stays in your mind after you have finished listening to the album.

Higgs Chicks – Doomscrolling with Kurt – My View
Doomescrolling with Kurt is indeed a special album. The Swiss Higgs Chicks define their very own style of doing country music in their debut release. It is not mainstream, you may feel it is a bit of pushing too much and disturbing. But you will recognize their music later once you listened to their record. And that’s quite a success, especially regarding it is your first major release.
