Hall of Fame Open 2024 – MD R1: A. Mannarino / H. Mayot (FRA) – J. Cash (GBR) / R. Galloway (USA) 3-6 4-6

Tuesday, 16th July 2024, also kicked of the men’s doubles competition at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open 2024. The first match on Court 2 saw second-seeded Julian Cash and Robert Galloway. They were facing the French pairing Adrian Mannarino and Harold Mayot, whom I had seen the day before against Aleksandar Kovacevic in the singles draw. A good option to warm up photographically for the first Indian doubles team to step on court. Here is my report.

Infosys Hall of Fame Open – Mannarino / Mayot vs. Cash / Galloway – Match Report

In the first set, I felt like both teams still needed to adjust to the hot and humid conditions, which were especially there in Newport on that morning. The first service games went rather straight, before both teams had a bit of struggle. While the second-seeded pairing survived a 30-30 situation in the fourth game at own serve, the French allowed a deuce at own serve right thereafter. The no-ad rule (which I feel being ridiculous) turns this from a stunning to an absolutely crucial situation. You are all-in – and the Julian Cash and Robert Galloway took the pot. This pushed the momentum towards the British–US pairing. The French had to face two more break points in their next game at serve. Even though this situation went in favor of Mannarino and Mayot – their opponents were in the comfort zone now and did not allow their opponents to come back in the first set.

There had already been some interesting rallies towards the end of the first set, and the match felt to write an interesting story in the second one. The French pairing broke the first service game of the favorites, who committed a 15-40 situation (which in fact means: three break points in a row). The fourth and fifth game of the set were likely the turning point, though. Two double faults by Cash / Galloway made them face a 15-30. If you make one out of the next two points as the receiver in that situation, you always cause an uncomfy situation.

However, the favorites survived and got themselves in the “Royal Flush” position in the no-ad tennis poker game. After a doubles fault and two nice points, the French faced a 0-40, meaning there were four break points in a row. That’s something you can hardly survive against slick opponents – and so the story went. Even though the following games did not create too many challenges for the servers, Cash and Galloway had the momentum now. The best illustration for that was the eigth game of the set, where they served three aces in a row. Nonetheless, the et felt to cruise towards the tie-break. In the tenth game, the French were already leading 40-15, but lost three points in a row. Game, set and match for Cash and Galloway in an interesting Tuesday morning match.
