Spotlight – Flyctory.com meets Georgia Nevada (June 2024)

Georgia Nevada felt to have the potential to become one of the key British country and Americana artists in the 2020’s. In 2021, she was awarded as the Female Vocalist of the Year at the British CMA awards. The last two years did not feature too many new songs, though. However, this Friday, she is sharing her new track Home with the audience. Beforehand, I had the opportunity to chat with her in my Spotlight interview section.

Spotlight – Flyctory.com meets Georgia Nevada

FLYC: Georgia, thanks for joining me to an interview. You are just about to release your new single Home. Tell us a bit About the song, please!
Georgia Nevada: Thanks for having me! Home is a song which helped me to find clarity and confidence in who I am, where I’ve been and where I’m going. It’s about embracing the journey to get to where you want to be and not to be afraid of it.

FLYC: It is your first single release in 2024. How was the writing process of Home?
Georgia Nevada: Writing Home felt like a real pivotal moment for me. It only took about half an hour but the rods just flew out!

FLYC: You grew up in Stevenage in Hertfortshire North of London. How have your first steps into Music been?
Georgia Nevada: Music has always been a huge part of my life. I grew up on the Les Mis tour in the late 90’s so from the start it’s really all I’ve ever known!

FLYC: You nowadays do Southern rock / country rock. Has that always been the genre you wrote songs in? Which other genres do you like?
Georgia Nevada: Country has always got a special place in my heart and I definitely find that I’m a country songwriter for sure. Sometimes those songs are quite rocky in my head but not always! I listen to a lot of genres really, pop punk, country and southern rock are probably my favorites.

FLYC: Even though country rock is much more popular in the United Kingdom compared to other parts of Europe, it is still rather a niche genre. How did your friends react when you presented your songs of that type?
Georgia Nevada: It’s always been a part of me really – I don’t think they know me as much different!

FLYC: Have there been any idols while you took your first steps into the genre? Did you maybe even manage to meet some of them in the meantime?
Georgia Nevada: Definitely, I grew up on Brad Paisley & Kenny Chesney. I was lucky enough to meet Brad at a show in Colorado and will never forget it! I’d say in more recent years the musicians I admire for their music would be The Cadillac Three, Ashley McBryde & Elle King.

FLYC: You went quite a hard way becoming a professional musician. For example, you played in a lot of talent competitions. How did you keep the faith and keep believing in your goals?
Georgia Nevada: I loved being in talent competitions when I was younger, the feedback I got at every one really helped me to develop as a performer and an artist.

FLYC: The surname in your artist name, Nevada, is not your civil name. How and when did you come up calling yourself Georgia Nevada?
Georgia Nevada: I was actually at school and trying to come up with a stage name because my legal name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue! I was looking into different landscapes and locations when a friend of mine mentioned the Sierra Nevada waterfall. Georgia Sierra sounded too pretty so Nevada it was!

FLYC: Especially in the very early 2020’s, you released two singles, which made it to the top of the UK Country iTunes charts. Tell us a bit about them, please?
Georgia Nevada: Sure, so Whatever You’ve Got was my first single, it was a song about taking whatever life throws at you and aspiring for more.
The Devil Dealt Me You was the second, it was a song co-written with Kyle Elliot who’s an extraordinary songwriter. It’s a love song with a bit of a twist!

FLYC: How was it like at that time knowing that you are on the top of the genre in your country?
Georgia Nevada: There are so many incredible artists in UK country, it meant an awful lot to know that I was among the people I admire.

FLYC: You also played quite a lot of festivals during that time. What have been the most memorable experiences to you in that regard?
Georgia Nevada: I played on the main stage of Old Town Live back in 2022, that experience was incredible – a crowd as far as the eye could see and it was also a hometown festival which added a little something special to the occasion.
I’m also a huge fan of Drake White and was lucky enough to be on the same lineup as him or Millport Country Music Festival. It was a huge personal milestone!

FLYC: Since 2021, you slowed down releasing music a bit. There was no single release in 2022 and only one, Saving Grace, in 2023. Has there been any specific reason for that small hiatus?
Georgia Nevada: I was focusing on myself a little bit among a few life complications. I also got married and bought my first house! I was writing and performing consistently while I was away, so it doesn’t feel all that long to me – I’m excited to be back to releasing!

FLYC: Saving Grace has been released together with Emma Moore. How did you come up with that duet?
Georgia Nevada: Emma is one of my closest friends and I’m a huge fan of her writing. She’s an incredible songwriter, it just seemed natural that we write a duet about friendship!

FLYC: How was it like to record the song with her?
Georgia Nevada: It was great, we worked so well together with our producer, Tim Prottey-Jones. The process was a breeze!

Coming back to Home. What are your plans for this year? Will there be additional songs? Or maybe some more song releases?
Georgia Nevada: There will definitely be more from me. I can’t wait to share it all!

When you release a song like your new single, do you set any targets for that? Or is there anything specific (like stream statistics, fan comments, …) you will monitor on release day?
Georgia Nevada: I try not to get too bogged down by metrics. I love to hear everyone’s feedback and to see people interacting with it across their socials – but I definitely don’t monitor it from a critical point of view. I’m doing what I love and I hope other people love it, too!

Last, but not least: your husband is also your drummer – or vice versa. Does that help you to arrange your life as a musician?
Georgia Nevada: Absolutely! Our diaries are very easy to organize and he’s just as excited as I am when we are offered a new show. He’s always got my back on stage (literally!) and I know I can rely on his calming presence during the pre-show nerves.
