Flyctory.com Cons

  • Rather pricey
  • Illustrating the place does not fully work out

The story of Bryggens Museum (or Bymuseet in Norwegian) started with a calamity. A fire in 1955 ravaged parts of the historic district Bryggen in Bergen. During reconstruction works, excavations revealed significant structures and artifacts about the Medieval life in the city in Western Norway. In 1976, this lead to the historic museum – which is still nowadays one of the key attractions of the city. Here is my review.

Bryggens Museum – Location & Admission

The museum is located at the Northwest edge of the Bryggen historic district. It is absolutely worth having a walk through that area and finish with this place (or vice versa). Bryggen is right next to the city center, located in a lovely bay of the city. The parking situation may be challenging, but the Bryggen bus stop features multiple connections of the city public bus network.

The museum is opening daly. In the summer season from May to September, the opening times are 10:00 to 17:00. Winter opening times are shorter, from 10:00 to 15:00. The adult admission is 170 NOK, roughly 14.50 EUR. With the Bergen Card, you receive a 50% discount. The museum is also driving other museums in the city, like the Rosenkrantz Tower or the Bergen School Museum.

Bryggens Museum- The Visit

The museum is documented in Norwegian and English. The first steps you take introduce you to the Medieval history of the city and general information. Then, you head right into the excavation side, which you can explore via bridges. Illustrations tell you what the structures you see on the ground have originally been. This is very nicely illustrated, so that the site as such is very transparent to the visitor.

On top of that, the museum features a wide range of excavated items. It features a wide range, from household goods to jewelry and spiritual items. You also learn about the development of Bergen during that era. Bryggens Museum thereby tries to have parts of the exhibition, which are suitable for children.

Bryggens Museum- Services

The staff in the museum was very nice. The museum drives a gift shop as well as a cafe, which was a nice place to hang out.

Bryggens Museum- My View

The district Bryggen is definitely a must-visit when you are in Bergen. In line with that, visiting the Bryggens Museum feels mandatory as well. It is definitely a good place, but does not have that must-visit spirit to me. They really try to give visitors an illustrative and interesting visit. However, it is finally an excavation site, which is heaven for archaeologists, but less charming for ordinary visitors. Thus, the museum barely misses the Top Pick! rating. Also, the price feels a bit too high.
