Based in Germany, having roots in two continents and being influenced by French music – that sounds interesting! When I checked out the new releases as of 22nd November 2024, I ran into Crucible, which is the third album overall by Deer Park Avenue. I felt it is a really nice record for Flyctory.com.

 

Deer Park Avenue – About The Artists

Deer Park Avenue is a sibling indie rock duo based in Munich, Germany. It consists of the Indian–American sisters Sarah (guitar) and Stephanie Snyder (drums). Both are also singing. Their music has been inspired by various genres, including Bollywood sounds and French pop. In 2016, a self-titled album started their major releases. Two years later, they shared Conscious Mess. In 2023, there has also been the first Deer Park Avenue EP; Dark and Stormy.

 

Deer Park Avenue – Crucible – Track by Track

The twelve track album lasts 38 minutes.

1. Cave

Cave is opening the third album of the sisters. The single release presents a rather straight rock sound with a nice melodic style. I especially like the very present chorus in here.

2. Crucible

Crucible has already been released in the Swiss Mix before the album. The album is less rocking and thus cones with a rock-pop feeling. This more gentle style does suit well to the sound of Deer Park Avenue and leads to a really good listen.

3. Shut Me Out

The two young ladies are rockers – and songs like Shut Me Out illustrate that perfectly. The song is driven by the riffs of Sarah’s guitar, while her sister’s drums are especially leading to an additional kick in the chorus. The third song of the album also underlines why the band classifies as indie rock. It is rougher and moves slightly away from mainstream sounds.

4. Strut

Strut opens with some heavy riffs, before the sibling are completely kicking off for the fourth song. The track increases the rock  level even further, so that some hard rock lovers might think about about headbanging. However, the song also comes with some virtuous elements.

5. Queen of Disaster

Another single release which was part of the Crucible campaign is Queen of Disaster. Right at the beginning, the duo states My name is the Queen of Disaster. The song is no disaster at all – fans of female rock music will definitely love it. Again, the band is combining independent rock styles with good melodies.

6. Dance

With the sixth song of Crucible, it is time to Dance – at least regarding its title. The Snyder sisters slow down the pace in this song, however. Th song is not slow enough for a romantic and close dance, though. However, later parts of the song increase the pressure from the guitar and the drums.

7. Moon River

This one is indeed a version of the legendary Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini track. However, in the context of the album, the distant sound of one of the band members singing Moon River just acts as a 45 second interlude in here.

8. Moon River Flow

Suitably, the following track is Moon River Flow. The song is comparably groovy and thus feels a bit like a slower blues rocker. A rather emotional Cruicible moment.

9. Pink Champagne

Pink Champagne s another emotional song. However, the ninth song of the Deer Park Avenue album is coming with a much finer sound, sweet and rather quiet vocals and the acoustic guitar. The last part of the song shows the ladies’ rock heart as well, though. I really appreciate to get introduced to that kind of sound by the duo.

10. Prom Night

After the Pink Champagne, we are going to the Prom Night. However, the first verse already states Never had a High School sweetheart and thus introduces a sad song. The song gets very energetic and angry over time, which leads to a good listen.

11. Outta Here

Outta Here reminds of the songs at the beginning of the album. The song is a straight rocker with a good melody, which leads to a catching listen.

12. Voices

Deer Park Avenue close Crucible with Voices. The song nicely moves between vulnerable and desparate moments. You seem to feel the voices in my head as well while listening to this one. A worthy chucker-out.

I really like Crucible. Deer Park Avenue illustrate their talent and that they could become a really major player in the indie-rock scene. They are not fully there yet, but this record is already really convincing.
