I was really happy when I received the promo for the album Got A Long Time by the band Sun Smash Palace. I simply rarely run into music from Luxembourg. The indie-rock band published their sophomore album on 12th July 2024. Here is my review.

 

Sun Smash Palace – About The Artists

Sun Smash Palace do a mixture of indie-rock and surf sounds. They are based in Luxembourg, but the band is quite international. The band members also come from France, Italy and Germany. Guitarist Eric Busse founded the band in Seoul, South Korea, where he ran into most of today’s band members at a networking event. Namely, the band consists of Axel Besnier (guitar), Vita Stasolla (bass) and drummer Michele Molinari. The latest band member is pianist and saxophonist Raoul Pagliarini. In 2021, two years after founding the band, they released their self-titled debut album. In 2022, they added the EP An Answer to a Question That I Didn’t Know I Had to their discography.

 

Sun Smash Palace – Got A Long Time – Track by Track

The nine track album lasts 37 minutes.

1. Run Away From Your Attire

The press kit names the album being the perfect sound track for the summer. The opener Run Away From Your Attire has a lot, even if I would not yet put the sunblocker on. The sound is funky, melodic. A very versatile sound at the beginning of this journey.

2. Got A Long Time

Call you up in the middle of the night
Feels like in an MRI
Shaking, rolling, sounds like a bad rave
I need to get out, out of this place

The second song has a very special kick-off. It starts with keyboard sounds, some guitars and a bit of rhythm. The atmosphere is dark. However, the chorus completely breaks this mood, which tends to make you look for the skip button. Don’t go for the next song too early! There is some happiness and funky indie pop in here as well. Nonetheless, Got A Long Time feels a bit too demanding and lengthy (4:22 minutes).

3. The Hollow Sound of Popping the Stem out of a Cherry

After two more than four minutes songs, this one is rather short (just 2:49 minutes). Therefor it has a long one… The title. And it has a cool pop sound. For the first time, the surf music touch becomes undeniably present as well. I like it.

4. Oysters Killed Patrick

Rocking guitars, synth sounds from the keyboard and a pop-ish rhythm. You just cannot say that Got A Long Time is a boring or monotonous album. In this song, the alternative touch of the Luxembourg band becomes very present. Vita Stasolla does not only create a lovely groove on her bass – she is also present on the vocal side.

5. Give Me Love

The groovy signature of Sun Smash Palace continues in Give Me Love. You enjoy listening to this rather easy song with a happy melody. A really nice one – which is definitely coming with some summer vibes.

6. Suburban Summer

There hasn’t been a single release on the album yet. In fact, the four closing tracks have already been released before the album. I did not have a deeper listen to any of them before the review, so that I enjoy the sound of Suburban Summer definitely. The rather slow song comes with summer night vibes, Raoul Pagliarini and his saxophone are very present and leave a nice touch.

7. Summer Drive

Summer stays in the title of the seventh song – the following six minutes of Got A Long Time are blocked for Summer Drive. The song is rather unagitated. Its sound is very pleasant, though, and makes you enjoy the groovy vibes and the story.

Oh, will it always be three months of promises
Heard of but never seen
another summer about to happen
How many more?

8. New July

Summer vibes continue with New July. The 4:27 minute song has a nice, fine melody. The vocals are rather high. However, the song also comes with a really nicely rocking guitar part as well.

9. Friend of Mine (with Carnival Kid)

The final song of the album is a collaboration with Carnival Kid, a German artist from Erfurt. The song is very rhythmic and melodic. Friend of Mine is definitely another kind of song on the album, rather heading to the pop-rock direction. However, the instrumental part give you that Sun Smash Palace touch as well. A really good way closing this set of nine songs.

I wouldn’t state that Got A Long Time is outstanding, but I really had a good time with it. The band is having its own sound. However, Sun Smah Palace present it in a very versatile and entertaining way. No hot day outside, but a pleasant summer day.
