Even though her debut EP has just been some two years ago, JJ Wilde already got quite some attention, especially in the Canadian rock music scene. Her second EP Wilde will be released on 14th May 2021.

 

JJ Wilde – About The Artist

JJ Wilde is a rock singer from Kitchener, some 100kms Southwest of Toronto. She debuted with Wilde Eyes, Steady Hands, an EP, in 2019. Last year, she added her first album Ruthless. The album has been nominated for Rock Album of The Year at the 2021 Juno Awards. There are still a couple outstanding award nominations. The key driver of this success is her debut single The Rush. In 2020, she topped all three Canadian rock charts with that track for nineteen weeks. In the meantime, two more JJ Wilde singles were on the top of Canadian rock charts.

The six song EP lasts 20 minutes.

1. Bushweed

Bushweed is a bit of a slow rock track. JJ Wilde’s style of singing and the song itself reminds me a bit of Amy Winehouse. Nice starter, indeed.

2. Off The Rails

The second song has a darker atmosphere. Cool bass sounds. The hip hop parts move the song rather to the pop direction – not that surprising that the promotion platform I used primarily flags this EP as pop music, if you listen to that song.

3. Mercy

Mercy is one of two single released taken from the Wilde EP so far. The song comes with the sound of dark country / gothic country songs. I like the threatening touch of the verses, combined with the powerful, almost screaming sound of the chorus. Time to bang your head – even if it is a rather slow rhythm you do that.

4. Someone Under You

Someone Under You is a very melancholic, slow track, in which angry and powerful moment pop up here and there. I enjoy the plot of the song, even though I overall prefer other tracks of this collection of six songs.

5. Stop Draggin My Heart Around (feat. Brett Emmons)

Nice guitar riffs, powerful, marching power by the bass – Stop Draggin My Heart Around is a great song – and the collaborations with The Glorious Sons’ Brett Emmons adds a nice value to this song as well. Great one.

6. Best Boy

With Best Boy, the EP closes with finest Rock’n’Roll with a dark touch. I like the pop sprinkles. JJ Wilde has impressed me with her music, definitely.

This lady just does it good!. JJ Wilde impresses me with these six songs. I would love to have some more variety, maybe, but there are definitely some cool songs in here. Not that surprising that Canada already loves her – let’s see if this EP can give her some more global visibility.
