Keb' Mo' - The Breakdown
Flyctory.com Pros
- Very personal album
- Lovely, emotional storytelling
- Two very nice blues-gospel tracks
The five time Grammy Award winning blues artist Keb’ Mo’ is truly a legend of his genre. With Good To Be (2022) and Room On The Porch (2025, with Taj Mahal), I already featured two of his albums. On 21st August 2026, he is releasing his 16th solo album. I just had to have a deeper listen into The Breakdown.
Keb’ Mo’ – About The Artist
Kevin Roosevelt Moore, known as Keb’ Mo’ is a US American blues artist born on 3rd October 1951. He is especially known for delta blues and country blues songs. Even though he is nowadays known as a guitarist and singer-songwriter, he started as a steel drum player at a calypso band. He also worked with multiple different artists. He started his solo career with the 1980 album Rainmaker, which has been released under the artist name Kevin Moore. With Keb’ Mo’ released in 1994, he started using his nowadays artist name. Eight of his albums topped the US blues charts.
Keb’ Mo’ – The Breakdown – Track by Track
The ten track album lasts 39 minutes.

1. Fussing and Fighting
Fussing and Fighting has been one of the songs which have been released before the album. The atmosphere is rather relaxed. There is a touch of country in the bluesy track, which is focusing on its lyrics and Keb’ Mo’s vocal performance. With the clapping sound in the background, it feels like a live recording. That leads to an even stronger personal touch.
2. Every Step of the Way
Every Step of the Way continues the album in a similar style. No clapping in the background this time, but the slow blues song feels like a very personal track, which is moving between pain and bitterness (I’ve had some heartache, tasted the bitterness of pain) and some optimistic outlook (But after every stumble, I’m still standing tall).
It don’t matter, how high the cost
Of dreams won or love lost
It’s made me the man I am today
So I’m thankful for every step of the way
3. They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To (feat. Take 6)
Take Six is an eight time Grammy Award winning a cappella group founded in Huntsville, Alabama. Keb’ Mo’ collaborates with them in this track, which has a much stronger blues vibe than the predecessors. The vocalists, which majorly sing in the background, lead to a nice depth and some gospel-alike vibes. This leads to a really nice listen.
4. More Yesterdays
The setting of More Yesterdays reminds of the opening tracks again. The recording majorly concentrates on the acoustic guitar and the vocals. The slight reverb lead to the impression of being on a singer-songwriter stage than this one being a studio recording. However, that leads to a wonderful spirit of this song.
I’m takin’ myself too serious
I tell myself lighten up
You might have more yesterdays than tomorrows
5. We Make Love
The Breakdown continues with We Make Love. The arrangement stays in that intimate and personal style, even though the 3:34 minute overall feels more groovy and blues-ish. Thus, the song has a very strong presence and stays in your mind.
We make peace
Compassion
We make time, in a timely fashion
We make love
6. Walking on Water
I’m always searchin for answers
Down here- reachin’ for stars
The only truth that I’ve ever found is for me
There’s no such thing as solid ground
The sixth track of the record feels very melancholic, almost desperate. It almost feels like the time stood still during these three and a half minutes. Emotionally, the song is definitely one of the highlights of the album.
7. Hand It Over (feat. Soweto Gospel Choir)
After these personal, fragile song, there are more rhythmic vibes on The Breakdown again. From the very beginning, there is clapping rhythm. The South African Soweto Gospel Choir in the background adds a lot of energy to Hand It Over. Again Keb’ Mo’ combines blues and gospel elements. And again, this leads to a lovely listen.
8. Living in the Moment
I’m always fallin’
For someone who’s fallin’
In love with somebody who loves someone else
I’m always sleeping
With someone who’s keeping
A light in the window and their heart on the shelf
The eighth song is another absolute beauty. The song is another love ballad. Not that surprisingly on this album, the song is not without any trouble and issues.
9. Stitched Up Heart
With 3:19 minutes, Stitched Up Heart is the shortest song of The Breakdown. Keb’ Mo’ beautifully describes, how the right, loving person can change your life. She knew I had a problem, only she could make it right, he states in the first stanza. It’s such a lovely statement in a touching love song.
And now I got a stitched up heart
With nothing to lose
A brand new start
And a brand new groove
No matter where I go
Or wat I do
My stitched up heart’s gonna carry me through
10. One Day Away
The record closes with another single release, One Day Away. Only one day away, which makes the difference is the key phrase in the chorus. The song is comparably melodic. And it leads to a beautiful, fine closing of the album.
Keb’ Mo’ – The Breakdown – Spotify
I will add the Spotify widget once the album has been published.
Keb’ Mo’ – The Breakdown – My View
The Breakdown is a very beautifully written album. There are not too many loud or present tracks, even though the two blues-gospel ones somehow stand out. Keb’ Mo’ rather fascinates with very straight, emotional, and personal storytelling. This works out in a lovely manner.
