The Waltons call their music cow-punk and mix country and punk elements in their music. This is a quite successful concept – the band exists since 1983. On 28th November 2025 they dare to go for a Christmas album, It’s Christmastime!. The album is their tenth overall.

 

The Waltons – About The Artists

The Waltons have originally been called Johannes Paul und die Ewigen Zweiten (“John Paul and the eternal second-placed”). The band has been founded in 1983 in Borken in Western Germany, but then formed as The Waltons in Berlin in 1985. The only active founding member is singer and guitarist Bene John-Boy Walton. His bandmates nowadays are Hatto Doc Walton (bass, guitar, vocals) and Marlon Kid Walton (drums, guitar, vocals). After trouble with their record company, the had a hiatus between 1994 and 2004. Their most recent album release is Back in the Saddle (2018).

 

The Waltons – It’s Christmastime! – Track by Track

The 16 track album lasts 41 minutes. Four songs have already been released in an EP in 2024.

1. Let It Snow

The album is a mixture of Christmas classics (presented in the The Waltons style…) and some originals. This one is obviously a classic. In the cowpunk interpretation, the speedy track just takes 77 seconds. Still, it is a fun listen.

2. Christmas Day

John-Boy Walton is stated in the credits of Christmas  – which means that this one is the original of the album. The song obviously feels less familiar, but the blending of Christmas kitsch and the rough sound (and lyrics) of the band does work nicely. I am sure Santa is rocking with them already.

3. Merry Christmas Everyone

This classic comes in the same style as Let It Snow. The speed is higher than you would typically expect and The Waltons drive the it with a very present beat. The melody and lyrics are – obviously – not too surprising. I am sure you can sing along.

4. Here Comes Santa Claus

For Here Comes Santa Claus, the guitars strum an even darker welcome riff. The song has a nice rock signature, but also cannot deny a certain country music flavor. Meanwhile, the speed is in expected range. You listen to these two festive minutes and enjoy.

5. Rocking Around The Christmas Tree

With 83 seconds, it is definitely another brief Rocking Around The Christmas Tree. The additional female singer (name not given in the press kit) adds a nice touch. Nice one.

6. Winter Wonderland

The driving beat and the rock’n’roll vibes suit surprisingly well to Winter Wonderland. The groove section is working well, too – so that this one is a nice track for Santa’s rocking crew.

7. Mary’s Boychild

To me, Christmas cover / traditional song albums always have the risk of getting boring. You know the melodies and lyrics anyway – and after a few tracks you are into the style of the artist. At least, short before half time, The Waltons don’t risk these feeling from my side. Covers like Mary’s Boychild still present something new and surprising to me.

8. Rudolph

Don’t we all somehow love the red-nosed one? However, Rudolph is not the classic tune with a shortened title. It is in fact a The Waltons write. The track comes with a easy, but very catching melody and lyrics. They keep me running all night long – you might think of these words way after you listened to It’s Christmastime!

9. Jingle Bells

Okay, I don’t need to tell you too much about this original. You all know it. The Germans take out their guitars and add a lot of rock power to this one. I like it – it’s definitely one of my favorites so far!

10. Christmastime On Waltons Mountain 2025

Okay, you don’t need to guess whether this one is a cover of a Christmas classic or a new song. The title tells it. The tenth track of the album is one of my favorite. You can rock, you can dance, you can sing with the band. The lyrics even include a Merry Chrismas to everybody and a family-style choir snippet.

11. Riders Of The Rough Nights

It’s Christmastime! continues with another original. This time, there is also no doubt about the style of song – it welcomes you with rough riff and soon also presents a stomping beat. The song is definitely perfect if you belong to the Riders Of The Rough Night. Great ones!

12. Together We Stand

The longer Chistmas Day (or Christmas Eve, if you are German) is running, the more there is a need for some party tracks. You had some wine or spirits, you complained about the presents already – so Together We Stand is the right statement to agree on. Nonetheless. The Waltons deliver the perfect sound track for that – somehow inevitable – situation.

13. Rawhide

With Rawhide, The Waltons go back into the 1950’s. Ned Washington and Dimitri Tiomkin wrote this song, which was a theme of a TV series as well. On It’s Christmastime!, it might not spread holiday vibes, but it is a cool Western-style rocker.

14. Waltons Mountain

Three originals are closing this Christmas album. The intro to Waltons Mountain feels familiar and spreads country vibes. The band is praising the the TV series family, which gave them their name. Fun one.

15. Will You?

Another country-style song on the album is the penultimate Will You? Another fun and light listen. I’m not thinking about the future anymore – dreaming of tomorrow makes no sense. The lyrics don’t feel too optimistic, but the lyrics continue with And all I can say is that I love you today – a nice love letter with a touch of irony.

16. For Alexandra

After the previous love song, you expect another track for the heart at the end of the album. Nonetheless, The Walton surprise in here. For Alexandra is an instrumental piano track and thus a beautiful fade-out of their very diverse look on the holidays.

I am not Santa’s biggest fan. However, if the holidays are like in It’s Christmastime!, there is definitely some fun in there. The Waltons present a wide range of songs, from hard rocking covers to gentle country-styl strummers. I really like it, and might rock with them at the end of December.
