VIF – H71 (Women) 28-24 (16-14)

The Faroese Handball National Teams have been great ambassadors of their country / territory during the last years. The more, I was looking forward to cover some handball matches during my October 2025 photography trip. Unfortunately, a lot of matches were held in parallel, so that I finally just had two matches of the top leagues on 5th October 2025. VIF from Vestmanna hosted H71 from Hoyvik, a suburb of Torshavn.

This posting comes with a section of 371 major size pictures in the sports galleries

VIF – H71 – Match Report

The match was a really close battle in the first half. The highest difference in goals between the two teams was two goals, which Vestmanna managed to gain four times. Even though the guests solely had the very first lead of the game, they always kept up and closed the gaps again. The most memorable scene was unfortunately a red card against H71’s Rakul Christiansen (13th), who stopped right wing Rakul Borgarlid Joensen in the jump at her feet – the VIF player could not play on again and was seriously injured thereafter. The period ended rather dramatic. VIF’s Bjorg a Liknargotu gave her team the 16-14 lead with five seconds left on the clock, but Karin Egholm could tie with the buzzer beater

Late Scores seal the Victory for VIF

You could almost copy and paste the report of the first half if you write about the second one (fortunately, without another sent off). A special moment of the match was in the 46th minute, when VIF’s goalie Ida Mai Nielsen threw the ball into the empty opposite goalcage. Goalie goals are always special – but that one meant a three goal lead (23-20) for the fist time. Again, H71 could recover and tied by Karina Debes Heinesen (54th, 24-24). The Hoyvik team, however, never managed to take the lead in this match. The last seven minutes were the premium time of the hosts, who did not allow another goal. Liv Sveinbjornsdottir Poulsen’s goal in the last minute sealed the 28-24 victory.

VIF – H71 – My View of the Match

Finally, H71 did not manage to get the absolute pressure on the hosts and lost a bit of faith and precision in the final minutes of the match. Nonetheless, my debut in Faroese handball leagues was an absolute thriller and a good, dynamic match with interesting stories. It was great fun to see these ladies competing in a close battle, in which Vestmanna had the better ending.
