Flyctory.com Pros

  • Nice view of the city
  • Panoramic cafe
  • Friendly staff

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Location rather outside the city

Apart from the very inner city center, Stuttgart is a  rather hilly German city. On one of their higher elevation, the SWR Stuttgart Television Tower (SWR Fernsehturm) is offering the opportunity to overlook the city. I took that opportunity and take on the observation deck.

SWR Stuttgart Television Tower – Location & Admission

The SWR Fernsehturm Stuttgart is located on the Waldau, a borough in the hills in the Southern part of Stuttgart. The easiest way to get there is the Underground train. Lines U7 and U8 either connect to Waldau or to Ruhbank (Fernsehturm). There are a couple of sports facilities in the area. The most famous one is likely the GAZi-Stadion auf der Waldau, home ground of the (fourth highest division) soccer club Stuttgarter Kickers.

The television tower is opening daily from 10:00 to 22:00. A one time visit for adults is 10.50 EUR. There are also annual tickets or guided tour through the towers.

SWR Stuttgart Television Tower – The Visit

After the ticket gate, you take the elevator up the tower. The height is roughly 150 meters. There are two platforms, connected by a staircase. The lower one is smaller, a large fence is around it, which might slightly block the view. the view from the upper deck is unobstructed and also features signs pointing you to the attractions of the area and the sights of the city. Be aware that especially the wind conditions on the tower may be very different from the ones you explored in the city before.

I did not have the clearest day during my visit. Nonetheless, the views of Stuttgart were really nice from SWR Televsion Tower. This included rather close spots like the GAZi Stadion, but also more distant points. You also see the geography of the region very well from this point. As the tower is built on an elevation of some 300 meters above sea level, the overview is really nice.

SWR Stuttgart Television Tower – Panorama Cafe

Below the viewing decks, there is also a panoramic cafe. It is a nice place to hang out, relax and enjoy the view. The prices were okay during my visit.

SWR Stuttgart Television Tower – Other Services

The tower also features the Restaurant Leonardts, which is currently only regularly open on weekends. You can enjoy the view and rather fine dining from there as well. The place can also be rented as an event location. The television tower also featured a souvenir store, which is offering rather typical touristic items.

SWR Stuttgart Television Tower – My View

The views from SWR Stuttgart Television Tower was really nice. You have to remark that the trip there is not challenging, but it simply takes a whole if you come from city center. Especially on a sunny and clear day, you should definitely think about adding this spot to your bucket list for the city.
