Flyctory.com Cons

  • Long waiting lines / may be packed
  • Comparably far away from city center

While Albuquerque in New Mexico is comparably flat, there are major mountains right East of the city. The Sandia Mountains, which peak up to 3,255 meters, are just a short drive away from city center. Not too surprisingly, the Sandia Peak Tramway (also: Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway) is one of the key attractions of the city. Another key factor to take the ride is that the 4.3 km long trip is the longest aerial tramway in the Americas. I had a visit in December 2026.

Sandia Peak Tramway – Location and Tariff

The valley station of the Sandia Peak Tramway i located Northeast of the city center of Albuquerque. From central locations to the tramway, it is a roughly 20 to 25 minutes (15 miles) drive. The area and the boroughs around are a mixture of commercial and residential buildings. There are not too many touristic services around. There are sufficient parking lots around the valley station. I would nonetheless recommend to go for a rather early ride as the lines might grow significantly during the day.

The tramway operates from 9:00 to 20:00 at the time of writing, Tuesdays closed. A flight ticket, how the tramway calls the ride, is 38.75 USD including fees and taxes, if you book online – which I absolutely recommend. The tickets have an two hour assigned time slot. There is also a package including dining at the mountain restaurant Ten 3 (Mondays & Thursdays only). Please note that the restaurant comes with different times. For example, during our morning ride, it was still closed (opening at 11:30 for casual dining).

Sandia Peak Tramway – Technology

A trip (one-way) on the Sandia Peak Tramway takes 4.3 kilometers and roughly takes 15 minutes. Thereby you climb from roughly 2,000 meters to 3,163 meters. The cabins have a capacity of 50 people (4,535 kilograms), so that you can transport up to 200 people per hour in each direction. It has been built in 1966 by a section of Bell Engineering from Lucerne, Switzerland. The cars have been replaced in 1986 and 2016, while new cables have been installed in 2016. There is no air conditioning as the breeze coming through small windows is typically sufficient.

Apart from a seat for the operator, the car is a full standing cabin. When running at capacity, it is packed, but still somehow convenient. Transporting a bike or similar items is not possible. During the entire trip, you just pass two support towers.

Riding the Sandia Peak Tramway

The views during the ride up to Sandia Peak are lovely. The valley of Albuquerque (the city itself is on an elevation of roughly 1,600 meters) offers stunning views, when the weather allows clear views. Obviously, being at a Westbound window (i.e. facing the valley station) leads to the most stunning views. However, the mountains also offer some interesting impressions, as the car is typically not very close to them. There are some impressions below. There is some information given by the operator, which helps you to spot some interesting sights. The Sandia Mountains do have decent wildlife, but you can typically not spot too much of them during your flight.

On the trip back, we went for an Eastbound spot, so that we could rather spot the mountains and seeing the car departing from the hill station. If you place yourself at one of the corners, you may also look around a bit.

Views from Sandia Peak

Despite being there in December 2025, we had pretty warm weather during our time at Sandia Peak. A nice feature of the ridge is that it is not too wide and another valley is at its East. Thus, it is worth to walk around and explore some of the views. Hiking is the most popular option in warmer times, while skiing is possible in winter, weather permitting. There are some spots and platforms, which offer amazing views.

Sandia Peak Tramway – Services

At the mountain station, there is the restaurant I already mentioned above. The mountain station does have lockers as well as vending machines, which can be very useful if the restaurant is not (yet) operating. The staff on both rides was very friendly and helpful. When we arrived back at the valley station, the lines to get into the tramway were massive. Nonetheless, they took quite long turnaround times, i.e. after deboarding, the cabins were empty for some five to ten minutes, before Sandia Peak Tramways boarded again for the next trip. That felt quite surprising to me.

Bathrooms are provided on the valley station as well as on the mountain stations. The uphill ones operate outside restaurant opening times as well. The major parts of the services provided by the tramway are on the base station. Especially, the includes the large and rather fine souvenir store. At this location, there are vending machines and lockers as well.

Sandia Peak Tramway – My View

Riding the Sandia Peak (Aerial) Tramway is absolutely fun and memorable. The views over Albuquerque and the valley are amazing. The services are good. However, the long waiting lines and the slightly remote locations do lead to a certain downside. Nonetheless, you should definitely go for this experience in my point of view.
