Observation decks are one of my favorite ways to explore a city. The view from a high spot, regardless whether it is a tower or a large Ferris Wheel, is often magical. The “typical” way to do so in Kuala Lumpur are obviously the Petronas Towers. However, there are also some other options in the Malaysian capital. In this post, I take you on top of KL Tower, which is also sometimes referred to as Menara Tower.

KL Tower – Location & Admission
KL Tower is located rather centrally. The two closest other tourist attractions are the Kuala Lumpur Eco Park (Taman Eko Rimba KL) and the Kuala Lumpur Telecommunications museum. The next bus stop is South of the attraction KL 17 KL Tower (Selatan),Jalan Raja Chulan. However, the tower itself is located on a hill. Going up there might be bothering, so far I rather take an Uber or similar and drive up the hill. Alternatively, tourist buses typically stop in front of KL Tower. There used to be a shuttle service, but it seems to be out of service. There are a few stores inside the tower as well as some services in front of the building. There is very limited parking. Next to KL Tower, there is the World Peace Gong.
The observation tower opens daily, from 9:00 to 22:00. I just had basic ticket for the observation deck only. The current price is 80 MYR, some 16.50 EUR only The full experience, including the terrace, seems to be 140 MYR. Please note that in Malaysia, there are typically different prices for locals / residents and tourists. If you pre-order tickets, the price is cheaper than at the gate.

KL Tower – The Visit
The construction work for KL Tower (or Kuala Lumpur Tower) started in 1991 and finished three years later. The official opening was in 1996. The total height of the tower, which is used for telecommunication, but also as an observatory, is 421. The observation deck is 276 meter above the ground. KL Tower has a bit of an traditional touch, but the structure is very good for purpose. There are limited reflections from the windows, for example. The Sky Deck and a revolving restaurant are above the observation deck. The elevator ride lasts less than a minute. During my visit, there were minor lines, but overall, getting up was very efficient.

The windows are slightly diagonal at some spots, which is very hand for looking down to the ground. You can also use one of the telescopes. On observation deck level, there are also some minor exhibits, like comparisons of the height of the tower with peers.

Views from KL Tower
Below, there are some of the views I had from KL Tower. Of course, you have a great view of the nearby buildings. I especially liked the bank office building with the reflecting windows. However, on a clear day you see the Malaysian hills and mountains in the background and also have a nice view of more distant attractions like the Petronas Towers. Due to the location of the observation tower, the view from KL Tower is definitely better than from Petronas Towers.

KL Tower – Services
On the bottom level of the tower, there are numerous shops and food places. Unfortunately, quite a few of them were closed during my visit. There is also a souvenir store on the observation deck as well as the option to refresh yourself. At the spot where buses and taxis arrive, there are a couple of food trucks, which is a nice (but not too shady) place to hang out before or after you visit the attraction.

KL Tower – My View
KL Tower is the best place I know to explore the city from sky level. There is an undeniable nostalgic touch in the building, but the views are simply amazing. Getting there in the Malaysia heat and humidity can be bothering, though.
