With the vast area the Japanese capital Tokyo and its surrounding is covering, it is not too surprising that there are multiple popular observation decks and towers in the area as well. After I already introduced you to Tokyo Tower, this posting takes you to another very popular attraction of that kind. Tokyo Skytree has also become very popular in social media. Let’s have a look over Tokyo from there.

Tokyo Skytree – Location & Admission

The mall Tokyo Skytree Town, which includes the Skytree itself, is located in the borough of Sumida. The most obvious way to get there is by rail. Toyko Skytree station, which is even served by a dedicated service. There are also bus shuttles from a couple of places in the city, including Ueno station and Tokyo Disney Resort. Toei Askakusa Line and Keisei Line stop at Oshiage, East of the mall. You enter the tower from the fourth floor of the mall and return to the fifth one when you return. In the mall, we struggled to find the walking routes to the two stations. Typically in Japan, this signage is close to perfect.

Typically, the observation tower is open daily, 10:00 to 22:00. The last admission is one hour before. During peak times, you should buy a ticket in advance. This also reduces the admission slightly. The admission to the Tembo Deck only is 2,100 JPY (12.50 EUR) when you book in advance and 2.400 JPY as a walk-in. The Combo Ticket including the upper Tembo Galleria is 3,100 / 3,500 JPY for adults.

Tokyo Skytree – The Visit

Tokyo Skytree has been opened in May 2012. It comes with a total height of 634 meters (this number in Japanese is pronounced Musashi, like the district where the tower is located. It is first of all the television tower for the reason and thus is the successor of the Tokyo tower. As said, there are two levels for visitors, the “basic”Tembo Deck at 350 meters and Tembo Galleria, which is 100 meters above that level. We just visited Tembo Deck. The visit in fact consists of three level, separated by five meters each. The upper level features a separate elevator, which brings you to the Galleria, which is a two level experience.

Each level of the Tembo Deck features different attractions. For example, the lower one has a glass floor, while the Wish Ribbon and a photography point are at the upper level. Getting up on the elevator was very efficient. I have to say, though, that the service going back down to mall level did not feel very efficient.

Views from Tokyo Skytree

The view from Tokyo Skytree is nice. However, there are two reasons why we overall rather liked the view from Tokyo Tower. The first of all might sound strange, but it is the height of Skytree. If you have a really clear day, I am sure that the modern tower gives you a blast of a view. But on an average day, you are simply much more exposed to fog and dust in the air. That was also the case during our visit – the pictures did get some significant Lightroom update already. The second downside of this place e.g. compared t Tokyo Tower is simply its location. There are some key spots of Tokyo, like the Asakusa Shrine, which are not too far away. Overall, though, the neighborhood of Tokyo’s historic TV tower has simply more interesting spots to explore. This may also be a matter of taste.

Tokyo Skytree – Services

On top of the services offered by the mall, there is a wide range of stores and services. During your time on the tower, you have the choice of three cafes and restaurants and the main upstairs gift shop. The tower also comes with some neat features like a post office on one of the decks. The key gift shop in the mall is a bit more sparse, compared to the one of the peer.

The cafes and restaurants looked really nice. The key attraction in regards of eating and drinking is likely the Kirby Cafe, though. It is located on the upper level of the mall. Similar to the Pokemon Cafe, you have to book well in advance or join a walk-in waiting line.

Tokyo Skytree – My View

The review might sound very negative, but, of course, the Tokyo Skytree is a nice spot to visit. It is very modern, the mall is nice and even the lower 350 meter high platform is impressing. Another positive thing is the very easy connection with local transport. Thus, especially as it is not that far from Asakusa Shrine, it is still a good option for your Tokyo bucket list.
