Going to the Switzerland vs. India Tennis Davis Cup, my initial plan was to have an overnight in Basel before the tie. However, the hotel prices in the Swiss city were that expansive, that I interrupted my trip in Freiburg, the next major city before the border. The hotel I chose was right at Freiburg Main Station and thus ideally located for my trip. Here is my review of the IntercityHotel Freiburg. Also due to the restructuring at H World International (formerly Deutsche Hospitality), the hotel will soon transform into a Leonardo Hotel.

 

IntercityHotel Freiburg – Location

The IntercityHotel Freiburg is located right at platform 1 of Freiburg Main Station. This platform is especially used for Northbound national rail services, e.g. to the Ruhrgebiet, Hamburg and Berlin. Southbound trains to Basel and other destinations in Switzerland (and even to Milan in Italy by the ECE 151) are served from platform 3. If you have mobility limitations, this is an absolute nightmare. There are only upstairs escalators (no downstairs ones!) and an elevator at one very end of platform 1 and 2/3. There are staircases more centrally, but they are stairs only – no ramps, no escalator, no elevator. The train station does provide services for travelers, naturally. However, when I wanted to grab some stuff around 21:00 on a weekday, I was quite disappointed. The supermarket on basement level is too pricey, many services were already closed. Freiburg is thought to be a vibrant University city – the main station definitely does not reflect that.

The station offers national and international connections. There are also regional and local train connections. South of the hotel, there is the central bus station. The bridge at the Southern end which features the upstairs escalators (only on platform 1 and 2/3) and elevators also provides connections via tram and local buses. The hotel also has access to a parking garage.

 

IntercityHotel Freiburg – Room

I had one night in a standard room at the IntercityHotel Freiburg. The refundable rate for that stay, Thursday to Friday in September 2025, was 128.48 EUR. Breakfast was still included due to my H-Rewards Gold status. However, this perk has been removed for future bookings by the loyalty program. The room came with the typical traditional IntercityHotel room design, I wonder whether they keep it when the hotel is transitioning its brand. I especially liked the large board for the suitcase and the corner work desk. Even the hotel feels a bit of aged here and there, the room was well-maintained. Despite having a direct view of the Southern part of the station, the room was overall well-soundproof.

The bathroom was in line with the room. It came with the typical traditional design of the brand. A bit of weir, there was only shampoo provided in the dispensers, including the one at the sink. Apart from that, the room and the bathroom felt well-maintained and clean. The bathroom also featured sufficient space, so that the room absolutely fulfilled my needs.

 

IntercityHotel Freiburg – Breakfast

Breakfast is provided from 6:00 on weekdays, 7:00 on the weekend. The breakfast buffet and its presentation was absolutely fine and had a nice range of warm and cold items. Other IntercityHotels provide a bit more in that regard, but I was absolutely happy with it.

 

IntercityHotel Freiburg – Service

Housekeeping in the hotel is only on demand. While my room felt quite fine, the public spaces could use some maintenance. Check-in and check-out was nice and efficient, I also had a nice chat with the receptionist at check-in about the impact on the H Rewards changes to the hotel. The WiFi provided worked very well. There is no gym or similar facility.

 

IntercityHotel Freiburg – My View

The stay at the IntercityHotel Freiburg was absolutely fine. Some maintenance in public spaces would lead to a more welcoming atmosphere. The commute from the hotel to Southbound trains is absolutely bothering, though. That’s really a shame, as the location would make it a perfect hub, also for some of the picturesque rail trips in the Schwarzwald region.
