Midlake are a US-American rock band. Their band history is impressing, they had their 25th band anniversary in 2024. On 7th November 2025, they released their sixth studio album, A Bridge To Far. Not too far, by the way… I received the album as a promo and had a deeper listen.

Midlake – About The Artists

Midlake are an alternative rock band from Denton in Texas. They have been originally founded by a group of jazz music students at the University of North Texas in 1999. The current lineup is Eric Nichelson (vocals, guitar), Joey McClellan (guitar), Jesse Chandler (keys, flute), Eric Puildo (guitar, keys), Scott Lee (bass) and McKenzie Smith (drums). In 2004, the band released their debut album Bamman and Silvercork. The band became especially popular in the United Kingdom where their 2010 album The Courage of Others peaked 18th in the album charts.

Midlake – A Bridge To Far – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 39 minutes.

1. Days Gone By

The album starts slowly with Days Gone By. The song is initially a fine melody, but more and more develops towards a very melodic, present track with slight rock vibes.

2. A Bridge To Far

The gentle melody of A Bridge To Far almost feels a bit of kitschy. Midlake present a rather slow and emotional title track of their album. Sounds a bit of negative, but in fact the title track of the album definitely stays in your mind.

Climb upon a bridge to far
Go anywhere your heart desires
Mornings will be oh so kind
So climb upon a bridge to far

3. The Ghouls

Wasn’t all in your head
This will happen again
World without end Amen

As the title suggests, the third song The Ghouls goes for slightly darker vibes. Nonetheless, the song stays melodic and also comes with a present rhythm and nice speed. The howling sounds boost the scary atmosphere. A nice alternative rock track, indeed.

4. Guardians (feat. Madison Cunningham)

For Guardians, the Texas band joins forces with California artist Madion Cunningham. Her fine high voice leads to a dialectic style song. The song does spread a certain level of monotony, which leads to a very special atmosphere. The second part of the song has slightly more power and a dramatic touch.

5. Make Haste

The next song is Make Haste. It is a very interesting listen as it mixes the typical alternative rock style of Midlake with a melody and style which rather reminds of progressive rock songs. The phrase Make haste In the morning will I feels very present in here. A nice song with a very special, unique touch.

6. Eyes Full of Animal

Lines in the sand were drawn
Eyes full of animal
And the foaming is forming

The next two songs have been released before the album already. Eyes Full of Animal thereby takes you on an almost five minute journey. The song has a nice plot, which finally leads to a lovely guitar solo in the bridge. Nonetheless, the song keeps this nice harmony and slightly soupy touch you have in other tracks of A Bridge To Far as well.

7. The Calling

With The Calling, Midlake present a very different track next. The song has a faster pace and is overall more rhythmic as well. With three minutes duration, it is also more compact than the predecessor, but the steadily increasing sound of of the song until its climax briefly before the end does leave a strong mark while consuming A Bridge To Far.

8. Lion’s Den

Ride in without a fear
Out of the lion’s den we go
Light in the darkest hour
Out of the lion’s den we go

I really like the plot of the album. Even there is a nice bandwidth of rock songs on the album, the listen from the beginning to the end feels very consistent. There are no disturbing or confusing passages. Thus, songs like Lion’s Den, which rather lean towards progressive rock again, just feel to fit in perfectly into the full experience.

9. Within/Without

Midlake saved the only song on A Bridge To Far, which is exceeding a five minute duration, for the penultimate position. The first some two minutes lull you with gentle sounds and fine melodies, before more and more the energy of this song is breaking out, followed by a fade out. Nice plot, even though I feel that there are more catching ones on the album.

10. The Valley of Roseless Thorns

The much time the penultimate track took, the little is necessary for the chucker-out. The Valley of Roseless Thorns is a 2:24 minute musical tale. The song feels like a beautiful, warming, and slightly dreaming fade-out and farewell from the album.

Midlake – A Bridge To Far – My View

Midlake are strong in creating atmosphere. If you allow them to catch you with their music, they will take you on a colorful musical journey. The album does have some weaker spots, but especially the variety A Bridge To Far has in stock during individual tracks and within the album does lead to a really nice listen.

Favorite Song: Lion’s Den
