  • Straight Volbeat sound
  • Some nice twists and surprising elements

My 2021 review of Volbeat’s Servant Of The Mind was at most average. Was I wrong about the Danish band? They can proof me wrong with their following album. Servant Of The Mind has been released on 6th June 2025 – and I had a listen.

Volbeat – About The Artists

Volbeat has been founded in 2001 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Lead singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen as well as drummer Jon Larsen are still active founding members of the band, which always acted as a trio. Their current bassist ist Kaspar Boye Larsen. Already with their 2005 debut album The Strength/The Sound/The Songs, the band had quite some success, making it into the Top 20 of their country. Nowadays, the album is a double platinum one in Denmark.

Thereafter, any Volbeat studio album has topped the Danish charts. However, especially the 2016 and 2019 ones, Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie and Rewind, Replay, Rebound did so in multiple other countries as well. They also have numerous single releases which topped the US-American Mainstream Rock Charts.

Volbeat – God Of Angels Trust – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 44 minutes.

1. Devils are Awake

Devils are Awake is a wake up call – not only for hell. The opener comes with powerful riffs, pumping drums – and a lot of energy from Michael Poulsen on the microphone. A darker sound, which works very well. Just when you feel it might become a bit of monotonous, the Danish band is adding some new features. A promising way to start with God of Angels Trust.

2. By a Monster’s Hand

The second track By a Monster’s Hand is one of three songs which have been published beforehand. The song is slower than the opener, less heavy and energetic, but therefore has a nice melodic touch. Especially the pre-chorus leads to a catching vibe.

3. Acid Rain

The first three songs feel to be a nice series and development. The yearning sound of Acid Rain spreads some melancholy, but also leads to the most melodic experience so far. A nice rock song, which might be a good radio track, due to its nicely flowing style. Good.

4. Demonic Depression

If the album would develop on like the first three songs suggest, we would quickly be in a kitschy pop-rock sound. Demonic Depression is thus urgently needed and breaks this development. Pounding beats and intense work catapult Volbeat back into the harder rocking sounds. Nice one.

5. In the Barn of the Goat Giving Birth to Satan’s Spawn in a Dying World of Doom

Search engine optimization tells me to avoid sentences over twenty words. Thus, I better don’t quote that song title. However, not only the lengthy title turns this one into a special listen. Especially the first part of the song is a blending of very contrasting genres. It feels like Johnny Cash, rockabilly and darker heavy metal sounds mashed up in one style. Later, the heavier sections take more presence, but there is some appeal in listening to this song, definitely.

6. Time Will Heal

Two single releases in a row – the sixth track of God Of Angels Trust is Time Will Heal. The song feels like the perfect mark Volbeat can leave in mainstream radio. The more gentle, tuneful, but also slightly melancholic sound of the track leads to a high chance that you recognize the song quickly. The chorus has a soppy touch in the context of the album, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

7. Better Be Fueled than Tamed

The first beats of Better Be Fueled than Tamed remind me of a straight rock’n’roll track. However, Michael Poulsen and his bandmates add their own flavor to the sound. Especially the beat of the song and the atmospheric vocals could turn this one into a fan favorite when Volbeat are presenting this song live on stage.

8. At the End of the Sirens

A touch of doom metal, some nice melodic elements and a good presence on the vocal side – the eighth track comes with a nice set of good elements. Indeed, it blends many of the good features of this album into a good listen. I like it.

9. Lonely Fields

The album is slowly coming to an end. The dreaming, emotional chorus is the core element of Lonely Fields. Despite the rather long duration of about five minutes, I lack to identify other absolutely catching elements of the song, though.

10. Enlighten the Disorder (By a Monster’s Hand Part 2)

Already by the title, Enlighten the Disorder is directly linking to By a Monster’s Hand early in this album. However, melodically the song is impressing and comes with powerful riffs, but does not remind that much of the second track of God Of Angels Trust. A nice way to approach the album’s finish line, but it does not feel like the golden medal.

Volbeat – God of Angels Trust – My View

God of Angels Trust presents the typical Volbeat sound. Fans of the band will enoy the little twists and special elements, like in the surprising In the Barn of the Goat Giving Birth to Satan’s Spawn in a Dying World of Doom. Overall, it is fun to listen, but feels more like a good, old friend than like a thrilling new love affair.

Favorite Song: At The End of the Sirens
