  • Intense atmosphere
  • Versatile, good stories

British Sally Potter is majorly known as a movie director and script writer. However, her creativity more and more also reflects in a musical career. On 2nd May 2025, she is releasing her new album Anatomy. I already had a listen.

Sally Potter – About The Artist

Charlotte Sally Potter was born on 19th September 1949 in London. She is an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). During her career, she was awarded at multiple film festivals. Already in teenage years, she did amateur movies. This also lead to two original motion pictures soundtracks by her. In 1993, she released the soundtrack to Orlando alongside David Motion, her The Roads Not Taken soundtrack is dated as of 2020. In 2023, Sally Potter also released the album Pink Bikini.

Sally Potter – Anatomy – Track by Track

The twelve song album lasts 46 minutes.

1. Anatomy

The album opens with its title track. In fact, Anatomy starts with the balalaika, played by Adrian Zolotuhin, before other instruments like the piano or a cello are joining for a 50 second instrumental beginning. The song has a slow, dignified, slightly jazzy style and rather comes with a nostalgic feeling. The lyrics are rather metaphoric.

The earth is my body
Skin muscle and bones
She is not mine but I am hers
And hers alone

2. Coming Home

The first of two single releases so far on the album, Coming Home, has a significantly more jaunty style. Nonetheless, it keeps the dramatic narrative style of the opener. This time, it is more personal and even a bit of thrilling. A nice song, which has a beautiful instrumental complexity.

3. Words

One of the songs featured before the album follows the other. The third track of Anatomy is Words. The almost five minute listen is majorly driven by the cello and the piano. There are also French horns in the arrangement. The vocal part is a mixture of almost spoken words and melodic parts, which creates a lovely plot.

4. My Earth

I just wanted to say to you
Not sure how, but right now
This is the best I can do
Ask you a question in a letter

The song is a musical love letter to the planet we live on. She even states You are my earth, beloved, my everything. The style of the song is very reduced with a strong focus on Potter’s voice. A very interesting and special part of her 2025 album.

5. Carmegeddon

After a couple of longer songs, Carmageddon is less than two minutes and opens for a set of three rather short listens. The sound of the track feels psychedelic and works with a distortion. A surprising one with a very interesting style. Nonetheless, Sally Potter is able to present a full story in here.

6. Walk Away

Especially the double bass and bass guitar in Walk Away bring back jazz vibes to the album. Similar to the song before, there is a rather experimental style in the song. Especially the drum section by Valentina Magaletti feels much speedier and agile than the remaining parts of the song.

7. Time To Go

Time To Go just uses Sally Potter as a singer and Viktoria Mullova on the violin. Naturally, this leads to a rather intimate atmosphere. Another short song, which nonetheless manages to leave a mark.

8. Come Back

The almost six minute Come Back takes you back to a more epic listen. This time, Potter is investing a lot of time into a mystical, catching atmosphere. Even though there are not too many different instruments in this one from a melodic perspective, the song feels having a nice depth. Overall, though, it majorly strikes with its plot.

9. Honey

Honey starts with a rather dreaming melody, which leads to a gentle and fine listen. The song is an introspective, thoughtful song, which is dealing with the ongoing destroying of nature. At the end of this very present and catching track, Potter asks Where is the priest to shelter us through this perpetual night?. A very interesting somg, in which three horns, a trumpet and a tuba are defining the mood.

10. Oh Daughter

This one is the only song on Anatomy, which has been recorded by the artist all by herself. Sally Potter sings it and also played the piano in the studio. This leads to another very intimate song, in which the Scottish lady does an impressing job.

11. Elegy

The album closes with two longer tracks. The first one of those is Elegy, for which Potter used three (double) basses and a cello. This naturally leads to a very dark and intense flavor. Nonetheless the very slow and sluggish style makes it feel a bit of lengthy.

12. The Fall

The ultimate song The Fall is special. The credits lists a total of fourteen instruments, which contributed to the recording. This includes three French Horns and three double basses each. The slightly easier style of this piano-driven track leads to a rather well digestible six minute experience.

Sally Potter – Anatomy – My View

Sally Potter is creating intensive listens. Her songs have a strong atmosphere, which is is frequently leading towards a dark-ish touch. The songs offer some variety and strike with good lyrics. Definitely a nice album.
