Despite Finish Ticket are looking back to 15 years of band history, Echo Afternoon is just their sophomore album. The US-American band releases this record on 6th September 2024. I had a listen and share my thoughts with you.
Finish Ticket – About The Artists
Finish Ticket are an indie-pop band. They have been founded in 2008 in Alameda, California, a town in the San Francisco Bay. The current lineup consists of Brendan Haye (vocals), Alex DiDonato (guitar), Ryan Blair (bass) and Gabe Stein (drums). Lucas Lee is part of the band as touring guitarist. In 2009, they released their first EP Life Underwater. So far, they have released three EPs and one album. However, their debut album Tears You Apart is dated as of 2013. In 2016, the band had an US Airplay hit with the song Color, which was part of the When Night Becomes Day EP.
Finish Ticket – Echo Afternoon – Track by Track
The twelve song album lasts 43 minutes.
1. Let You Go
Finish Ticket start their album with three songs, which have already been released as singles. The first one is Let You Go, which opens like a modern pop track, but then also shows some typical indie character. On the instrumental side, the most catching element are the synth lines in the background.
2. Changing
The second song on Echo Afternoon is Changing. The song has a rather straight mainstream pop attitude, coming with a beautiful melody. The chorus is energetic and very present. Again, the keyboard part is the key linking element. The song reminds me of 1980’s and 1990’s pop music. Nice one.
3. Float Away
Float Away is a bit more groovy than the songs before. The bass notes are more present, which overall leads to a “cooler” sound by Californian band. The guitar section is a bit more aggressive as well. Again, the chorus is a key element and shows a catching signature, which stays in your mind.
4. Bad Times
Brendan Haye’s vocal part at the beginning of Bad Times feels a bit more emotional. The song thereafter is rather rhythmic, though, and also has the right vibes to have some dancing moves along its sound. A typical pop song, which is made to make you smile and enjoy.
5. Raincloud
Raincloud opens – and stays – on the emotional side of the Echo Afternoon album. As you might expect by the song title already, the track is rather melancholic and thus adds a very different touch to the album. Despite some sad atmosphere, the song is a really enjoyable listen.
6. Nothing Coming Soon
The sixth track takes over the role of a 41 second interlude. A touch of wide space, which directly leads into the following track.
7. Don`t Need A Reason
Don’t Need A Reason is one of my favorites. It is rhythmic, groovy and present from the very first second. The slightly dramatic style of the song makes it feel very modern. Great song.
8. Out of a Dream
You cannot deny a certain boygroup-alike style of this song. However, sometimes you need a bit of love and harmony, don’t you? 3:24 heartwarming minutes by Finish Ticket.
9. Peace of Mind
The next four minutes of the album is the single release Peace of Mind. The song comes in a nice modern pop style with smart drumming. A good radio song – despite its four minute duration.
10. 25
The longest song on Echo Afternoon is 25. The song invests the duration of over five minute into bombast instrumental parts with backing, choir-alike, vocals. A good composition, which nonetheless feels a bit of lengthy.
11. Rough Patch
After this epic listen, Rough Patch just comes with a play time of 99 seconds. However, the majorly instrumental song (with some scattered vocal elements) is rather taking an interlude role.
12. The Weight
The closing song The Weight opens with slightly strummed guitars and a gentle vocal performance by Haye. The song gets a bit more dramatic over its duration of almost five minutes. Nonetheless, it rather reminds of a folk song than of pop music. This does not mean it is not enjoyable.

Finish Ticket – Echo Afternoon – My View
Finish Ticket released a really nice album with Echo Afternoon. Especially the first half of the album has some really catching tracks. The two long songs at the end of the album are a bit too lengthy, though. I like it.
