Truck Stop are one of the big names in the German country schlager scene. I already shared my thoughts about their 2021 album Liebe, Lust und Laster with you. On 9th May 2025, the band released a new album, Freiheit Pur (“Pure Freedom”). Here is my review.

Truck Stop – About The Artists

Truck Stop is one of the longest running acts in the German music scene. They have been founded in Hamburg in 1973. Drummer and singer Teddy Ibing is active since the very first days of the band. Another long-runner is Knut Kewrsdorff, who is playing the pedal steel and the guitar. All other band members have joined Truck Stop in the 2010’s and 2020’s. Namely, they are David Rick (guitar), Andreas Cisek (guitar, bass, harmonica), Tim Reese (fiddle, guitar) and Uwe Frenzel (bass, accordion).

Their list of studio albums is huge. Especially in the 1980’s, the band had numerous chart entries in Termany. However, they only made it into the Top 10 of Austria in that era, when their 1980 single Der wilde, wilde Westen peaked fourth there. This changed in 1999, when Truck Stop collaborated with TV host Stefan Raab for the parodistic Maschendrahtzaun song. The song topped the charts in Germany and Austria and went triple gold in Germany, platinum in Austria.

Truck Stop – Freiheit Pur – Track by Track

The twelve song album lasts 39 minutes.

1. Freiheit pur

Trucking and country-cowboy romance – the opener and title track just serves the good, old stereotypes. Truck Stop sound comparably modern in this song (which still means that they majorly serve the traditional listener). A good and promising opener.

2. Immer wieder

Wir würden’s immer wieder so tun (“We would do it like this again and again”) – the second song deals with the prejudices against the band. They even quote the Maschendrahtzaun in the song, in which they look back in the band’s history. The song is also praising and thanking their fans. I like this mid-tempo track with a nice rhythm.

3. Honky Tonk

Already the first notes of Honky Tonk tell you that the song delivery what the title is suggesting: a song made to party with the band. Even though the first guitar riffs fade rather quickly in the stanzas, the song is definitely enjoyable. I am sure the Truck Stop fans love this one.

4. Was Besonderes

The fourth song is the first love track of the album. The band states Weil Du was Besonderes bist (“Because you are something special”) in the chorus. The song has an undeniable schlager touch, but the country music vibes are dominant.

5. Kentucky

In the fifth song, Truck Stop take you to Kentucky. Especially the instrumental side of this one is really cool. Again, I would love them to continue with the stomping rhythm they sow in the chorus in the first stanza as well. I feel that this one is really fun. Let’sgo to Kentucky with the Northern Germans.

6. Frag’ doch einfach deine Nachbarn

Small town life and standing together in a community are typical country music topics. Frag’ doch einfach deine Nachbarn (“Simply ask your neighbors”) is in line with that. The song has very traditional and a bit of kitschy vibes. The typical listener of the band will very likely enjoy that, though.

7. Noch immer

This one is a romantic country music ballad. The song praises a good relationship. After many positive memories and metaphors, the chorus closes with Weißt Du was, ich tu’ es noch immer – “Do you know? I am still doing it”. Again, the instrumental side of the track is really nice. Well done.

8. Freitags hab’ ich keine Freunde

The title of the eighth track translates to “I don’t have friends on Friday”. It is about that all your friends are busy with other activities on that day of the week. A funny listen, even though I enjoy other Freiheit pur songs more.

9. Countryherz

“Country Heart” – that’s what this one is all about. Countryherz is thereby very soupy and the most schlager-alike track on the album so far. I’m not that much into it.

10. Manolito

The last previously released song of Freiheit pur is Manolito. The song is a typical Western story – which is told with a lot of irony. The song has some Mexican vibes, which turns it into a special and enjoyable listen.

11. Viel zu jung, um alt zu sein

“We are far too young to be old” – the penultimate song is a nice one about getting older, but still enjoying life as a musician as much as in earlier days. I feel that this song does not meet its potential. It is still a nice one.

12. Das war doch gestern

Das war doch gestern als wir noch jung und sorglos waren – “This was yesterday, when we were young and reckless”. The song reminds of teenage and young adult memories. The melody is just what you expect from Truck Stop. A nice way to close their 2025 album.

Truck Stop – Freiheit Pur – My View

I am sure Truck Stop fans will love this album. I especially like the more modern songs on Freiheit Pur. Especially compared to Liebe, Lust und Laster, the album feels more balanced and has less too soupy listens. Thus the rating is also better than in my 2021 review.

Favorite Song: Kentucky
