In July 2022, I went to Paola in Kansas in order to explore the home town of the (fictive) female main character of my favorite musical, Rock of Ages. This trip also required a night in the some 6,000 inhabitant place South of Kansas City. As you can imagine, Paola does not offer too many options – and thus, the Paola Inn and Suites has been an easy choice. Here is the review of my stay.
Paola Inn and Suites – Location
Paola is located about a one hour drive South of Kansas City, you first follow the I-35 South and then follow the US-169. The hotel is located just at the first crossing after leaving the highway.
The area is quite nice for travelers, there is a Walmart across the street and a couple of fast food destinations (including a delicious new Arby’s – which is a reference to the musical). The parking lot in front of the hotel is sufficiently large.
Paola Inn and Suites – Room
My King Room rate was subject to a summer promotion. The Saturday night stay in late July 2022 was 108.68 USD, including tax, refundable rate. This was rather remarkable as the weekend featured the end of one of the big annual events of the city, the Miami County Fair. The room was spacious. I liked the warm colors and equipment. Overall, the room, which was on ground level right next to the main entrance, was well maintained. Sometimes, it was a bit of bothering that people stood more or less right in front of the air conditioning for a smoke. The philosophy of the design of the room strongly reminded me of Hampton Inn stays in the USA. One corner of the room also features a fridge (with freezer) and a microwave oven. The work desk was also really nice for my purpose.
The bathroom was clean and very functional. A bunch of towels and some nice amenities added some warmth and welcoming feeling, so that I overall felt very happy to stay in the hotel.
Paola Inn and Suites – Breakfast
At breakfast, I again felt similarities between the Paola Inn and Suites and the Hilton low cost and full service branch Hampton Inn. There was a waffle machine, bagels, oatmeal and some breakfast sandwiches you could heat at the microwave. On the drinks side, there was coffee, tea, water and juices. Thus, the breakfast was absolutely in line with my expectations.
Paola Inn and Suites – Service
The hotel does run a small gym with basic machines, but it does not feel to be used too frequently and thus was rather having a touch of a storage room. The pool, however, is much nicer. The hotel even runs a hot tub, which you see on the pictures below as well.
The staff was very kind. The WiFi in the hotel was poor, at least in my room, but they could provide me with a workaround. Interestingly, they did not know about the prominent role of their home town in the musical.
Paola Inn and Suites – My View
The Paola Inn and Suites was the perfect stay for a hunt for footsteps of Sherrie Christian, which I realistically could not find in the city anyway. The location and staff is great, the rooms are nice and I really liked the pool area. Overall, they provide an absolutely nice value for money. This place definitely deserves the Top Pick! label.
