Flyctory.com Pros

  • Comparably compact, effective airport
  • Modern terminal building
  • Remarkably good connections, esp. to Europe

In May and June 2026, I had four shows of the Weird Al Yankovic Bigger & Weirder Tour 2026. I already shared my ímpressions of Weird Al in Alpharetta, the support act Puddles Pity Party there and impressions of the other three shows. The trip also lead to a an airport debut. For the first time, I had flights to and from Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU). I flew with Lufthansa, who operate from modern Terminal 2. Here is my review of the airport experience.

Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2 – Location & Transport

Raleigh Durham Airport (RDU) is the airport for Raleigh and Durham in North Carolina. In fact, it is located quite in the middle between the two cities, Northwest of Raleigh and Southeast of Durham. There are a couple of airport hotels at the Southwest of the airport, where the main access via I-40 is located.

The typical way getting to the airport is by car. The car rental center for the entire airport is located in the Southwest, close to the Interstate. Additionally, there are two bus connections from RDU. Line 100 is taking you to Downtown Raleigh, while the RDU Shuttle brings you to Regional Transport Center (RTC), from where there are additional connections.

Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2 – Connections

Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) comes with surprisingly good international / intercontinental connections. From Europe, Air France, Aer Lingus, British Airways, Icelandair, and Lufthansa connect to the airport. In that regard, this might already be close to the airport’s limits. The cabin crew on the inbound told me that if we would have missed our departure slot, we would have to wait for an incoming Air France flight, just for the sake that only one international flight may taxi at the same time. Other international connection providers are Air Canada, Aero Mexico, Bermudair and Copa Airlines.  In regards of domestic and continental connections, all major US airlines, American Airlines, Delta and United, run connections from North Carolina. Alaska Airlines and most low cost carriers fly to and from Terminal 1.

Arriving at Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2

;As said, there are quite plenty international connections to and from Terminal 2. The majority of them operate from the end of the C-Gates, one of two wings of the terminal building.  From there, you are guided to immigration. Despite Lufthansa arrived at the end of the terminal, the walking distance was rather short. Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is a compact airport with effective services. This also applied for the immigration, so that you had to wait a bit at the luggage belt before passing custom controls. In line with most US airports, domestic arrivals (incl. Aer Lingus, who have pre-clearance in Dublin (DUB)) have open luggage belts after leaving the airside area.

Departing from Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2

Overall, Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2 feels very modern. The aisles are wide, this also applies for the check-in area. The directions to the different airline desks were given very transparently. After check-in, you pass security, which worked very smoothly as well. This is a key advantage of a comparably minor international airport – you simply don’t loose too much time with the organizational and security duties.

After security, you head down to the security area. On the right hand side, there are the C-Gates, while the left hand side features the D-Gate area. Practically all along the way, there are restaurants and stores. This includes a virtual food hall, where food is delivered to locker-alike locations. The C-Gate area also features a duty-free store. However, this is rather small compared to more frequently connected locations. The waiting area feels very modern with different kinds of seats. Some of them come with electric power connections. Especially in the area featuring multiple international flights, the number of seats felt slightly limited, while that was absolutely relaxed in other areas.

Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2- Services

The staff at the airport was very friendly. As stated, services were very efficient. There is free WiFi throughout the terminal. Remarkably, all three major US Airlines drive airport lounges at Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU). I will take you to the United Club in a future post.

Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) Terminal 2 – My View

Terminal 2 at Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) is an absolutely fine place to fly from and to. The distances are short, the operations are very effective. Compared to larger airports in the region like Charlotte (CLT) or Atlanta (ATL), you do simply spend significantly less time with operational issues. Still, it features all the services you need as a traveler. Especially the number of international connections is remarkably good, which also underlines the economic importance of the Research Triangle Region.
