  • Very well preserved UNESCO World Heritage
  • Impressing Kaisersaal / Emperor's Hall
  • Lovely scenery

The Harz region will always be a special place to me. I studied mathematics at Clausthal Tech University and thus lived there seven years, either facing rain or snow (yeah, we had snow these days). The more I am happy to come back there and share some of the nice places there with you. In this post, I take you to the Kaiserpfalz in Goslar, a city right North of the mountains. The imperial palace was already built in 1050 and renovated in the 19th century. Together with the Old Town of Goslar and the historic mine Rammelsberg, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Here is my review.

Kaiserpfalz Goslar – Location & Admission

The imperial palace is located on the Southern edge of the city center of Goslar. It is close to the B82 national route, which also connects you to the Hanover to Kassel motorway. There are parking lots close to the attraction. However, the closest ones are rather limited and may be taken in peak times. Alternatively, you can take a walk from the city center or take public transport. The buses 803, 805, 810 and 861 take you to Werenbergstraße. The walking distance from Goslar Station is some 20 minutes.

You can visit the Kaiserpfalz every day apart from Monday. Opening times are 10:00 to 17:00. The adult admission is 7.50 EUR at the time of writing.

Kaiserpfalz Goslar – Impressions from Outside

The Kaiserpfalz is coming with a beautiful park, which is right connected to the Historic Town of Goslar. I felt that a review of the palace is not complete without sharing these snaps with you.

Kaiserpfalz Goslar – The Visit

The palace is documented in German only. However, you can rent an audio guide for 2.50 EUR, which features multiple languages. You start at the bottom of the building where you learn about the history of the building. The initial Kaiserpfalz has been built by Heinrich II around 1005. Heinrich III completed it during the 1050’s. The exhibition also illustrates the development of the Kaiserpfalz and Goslar. Some parts of the building, including the historic chapel do not exist nowadays. The key building, which still exists today is the 54 meter long Kaiserhaus (“Emperor’s House”).

Going upstairs, you reach the Kaisersaal (“Emperor’s Hall”). The huge room is full of impressing wall paintings, which tell the history of the building and their key persons in between the eleventh and thirteenth century. Furthermore, the windows give you lovely views of Goslar and the park in front of the palace. Finally, you visit the Ulrichskapelle (“Ulrich’s Chapel”). The sarcophagus still holds the heart of Heinrich III, who explicitly demanded that it stays in that German city.

Kaiserpfalz Goslar – Services

The Kaiserpfalz also drives a nice souvenir store, which is offering some really interesting, not that kitschy items.

Kaiserpfalz Goslar – My View

The building itself is already impressing. But the Kaisersaal turns the Kaiserpfalz into a must-visit. On top of that, the museum part on the bottom level is really cool. If you are in the area, you should explore Goslar and visit this very interesting place.
