  • Great voice
  • Fluent listen

Flyctory.com Cons

  • The songs feel very similar

I still remember well when I ran into Royale Lynn the first time in 2021. In February 2021, she released her single Rocket Man – and I loved it. The Canadian did quite a transformation from a country music girl to a hard rock lady. On 27th June 2025, this transformation reaches his first major step. Here is my review of her debut album Black Magic.

Royale Lynn – About The Artist

Unfortunately, there is not too much bio information about Royale Lynn. She is from Ontario, born there on 29th July 1994. As stated above, she started in country music and more and more mixed rock and hard rock elements to her music. This year, she supported Asking Alexandria on their North American tour.

Royale Lynn – Black Magic – Track by Track

The 12 track album lasts 35 minutes.

1. Greed

Greed lead the 18th April 2025 edition of my Songs of the Week. Now it is opening for Royale Lynn’s debut. The song comes with a nice blend of intense guitar riffs and electronic sounds. It already defines the sound of Black Magic quite nicely. Good one!

2. E.V.I.L.

The late May 2025 release E.V.I.L. has been the last single before Black Magic. The chorus comes with a good melodic touch. Overall, the track has quite a nice industrial touch.

3. Black Magic

The title track of the album is next. The song opens with a keyboard melody, but then moves towards familiar sounds. As an individiual track, the heavy song works well and nicely corresponds with Royale Lynn’s high voice. In the context of the album, it feels a bit too less surprising.

4. Sacrifice

Sacrifice is another song which made it into my Songs of the Week, when it has been released. It topped my 20th September 2024 edition of the series of posts. The song has a very versatile character, featuring a nice change between rather slow and rocking elements.

5. Pandora’s Box

Pandora’s Box is one of the more quiet songs of Black Magic. This leads to a very intense atmosphere. Another key feature of the album is that the songs are rather short. The statement Welcome to Pandora’s Box is no longer than 2:42 minutes – and that’s a quite average duration for this album. This leads to quick changes, but is rather unusual for the genre.

6. Dragon

The riffs on Dragon lead to a strong alt-metal flavor on the album. The song nicely illustrates the foundation on which Royale Lynn’s hard rock way is based. The rough guitars nicely correspond to her high voice. This track feels very interesting on the instrumental side, though.

7. When We Die

The songs of Black Magic are very close to each other. Thus, it is often about nuances whether you like the song or not. The three minute When We Die catches me with the chorus, which is one of the favorite ones of the album.

8. Wtch

With Wtch, the album has one of its loudest and roughest moments. The song has elements of rap-metal and thus offers a special sound in the context of the album.

9. Dark Mode

The groovy Dark Mode is the next song of the album. The song has a nice flow with hammering drums, before the song calms down and has a short episode, which reminds of Royale’s country music historic. However, this reference is a short one.

10. Inside Out

In the context of Black Magic, the chorus of Inside Out almost has a pop music touch. Overall, the song feels very modern. The chorus is the heartbeat of this one, though.

11. Death Wish (feat. Danny Warsnop)

Royale Lynn toured with Asking Alexandria recently – and the band is present on her debut as well. At least their singer Danny Warsnop is for this song already released before. The duet style is a nice feature of this song and leads to some change in the sound. I nonetheless feel that the song does not fit that well into the context of the twelve songs.

12. Battleground

With 3:14 minutes, the chucker-out Battleground is the second longest listen of Black Magic. The song leaves some emotional finale, which is somewhere between melancholic and sweet. Royale Lynn has won her first musical Battleground with this – and it is actually a nice finale.

Royale Lynn – Black Magic – My View

Black Magic is a good listen. The transition from boots to hard guitars has been successful and the album is a fluent experience. However, I wish Royale Lynn to be more innovative in here and offer a wider range of songs and sounds. The music feels very targeted for the North American market, unfortunately.
