Flyctory.com Pros

  • Very nice teenage country-pop debut
  • Modern, very well written songs

He had three million followers on TikTok (and almost one million on Instagram) before he released his debut EP. Teenage country artist Maddox Batson is a perfect example how young and emerging artists can play the social media game perfectly. On 21st March 2025, he finally released his first EP, named First Dance. I had to have a listen.

Maddox Batson – About The Artist

15 year old Maddox Batson was born on 13th December 2009. He is from Hermitage in Tennessee, but later moved to Birmingham in Alabama. An illness prevented him from pursuing a sports career and so he started to post his music on TikTok in 2022. Especially his cover of Dancing in the Sky posted in September 2023 went viral and he got in focus of the music industry. Already his debut single Tears In The River released in March 2024 reached ten million Spotify streams.

Maddox Batson – First Dance – Track by Track

The seven track EP lasts 18 minutes.

1. I Don’t Like You Anymore

Quite remarkably, only two of the songs of Maddox Batson’s debut EP have been released beforehand. I Don’t Like You Anymore is one of them. The song is a typical teenage country-pop track. However, Maddox’s clear voice and the modern style of the track is indeed catching and works out well from the very first moment of listening. Nice one.

2. Girl In Green

This single has been released in parallel to the album on 21st March 2025. With 2:11 minutes, it is also the shortest track of the EP (but not uncharacteristically short). Modern music is really brief. The song has what you expect: a well-told story about love and the Girl In Green, a nice, groovy vibe. I just have to agree that this style is working out well – even for an old fart like me. Nice.

3. X’s

With almost six million streams on Spotify, this single release has been the most successful of the promotion campaign towards the EP. A song about falling in love at young age and standing for it. A brief, but smart write, to which a wide range of the (North American) target audience perfectly related to.

Steal a kiss, spin you ’round
Sweep your boots right off the ground
We’re just getting started, girl, my favorite part is
Let ’em talk like they know us
Say we’re way too young to fall in love
Like wе don’t stand a chance
Dancing with these X’s on our hands

4. God Talkin’

God Talkin’ takes a slightly slower rhythm. This increases the emotional touch. There is not only the religious reference, but – finally – the song is about love again. You must be one of his favorites – a nice way to state love at a young age.

5. Problem

Maybe you’re the problem, you can say that it’s me – the first lyrics of Problem suggest that this one is less harmonic and more troublesome. The fifth song of First Dance also comes with hip hop style elements. Overall, this leads to some nice variation in the EP.

6. It Was You

The two longest tracks of First Dance are at the end of the EP. Nevertheless, that means that at least It Was You just does not make it to a three minute songs. The track is a bit of mushy, but this also somehow means it has the most harmonic and catching chorus. Thus, it is my favorite listen on this release.

7. Southbound

First Dance closes with Southbound, which is another song released before 21st March 2025. The song is a rather slow track in which Batson states Girl, we’re heading Southbound in the chorus. Despite the slower tempo, the song has a nice flow and a good groove. Nonetheless, in the context of the EP, it is not on the top of my list.

Maddox Batson – First Dance – My View

I am quite impressed by this debut EP. Maddox Batson and his team compiled a really nice collection of country-pop songs. You cannot deny a certain fit for a target audience, but the songs are a good listen even for an out-of-teenage-years audience. Thus, I really like First Dance.

Favorite Track: It Was You
