It is already three and a half yeas ago since German schlager artist Vivien Gold released her most recent album Gedankenkarussell in March 2021. On 11th October 2024, she is sharing a new set of songs with her fans. Here is my review of Paradiesvögel (“Birds of Paradise”).

Vivien Gold – About The Artist

Vivien Gold is a German artist, who is originally from Cottbus. After her Gedankenkarussell, she steadily grew her career and also had multiple prominent TV appearances in German-speaking countries. Some more bio can be found in the Gedankenkarussell review. Paradiesvögel is her sophomore album.

Vivien Gold – Paradiesvögel – Track by Track

The eleven track album lasts 44 minutes.

1. Paradies (Intro)

The first fifty seconds of Vivien Gold’s album is nothing but an intro, some electronic sounds and chords leading into the title track.

2. Paradiesvögel

The title track has been the most recent single release before the album has been shared. The typical schlager song with some sprinkles of pop is not really about birds, but about diversity and daring to be different. I really like this one, even though I somehow feel it is a touch too slow. Ths, however, improves the focus on the groove of the song.

3. Der Fremde

The title of the third track of the album translates to “The Stranger”. Du bist der Fremde und das Vertraute, Du bist die Stille und das Versaute (“You are the stranger and the familiar, you are the quiet and the the filth”) describes female fantasies in a rather straight way. Thereby, the song again feels rather brave and does not focus on hard-beating drums. This leads to an unexpected, but not bad, character of the song.

4. Zara

The fourth song Zara also comes with a strong female message. Vivien Gold reminds of the strong women of earlier decades. Thereby, Zara might be a reference to Zarah Leander, who is explicitly mentioned in the press kit of the album. The song puts its message into the story of a party night. Nice one.

5. Gold

This song is easy to describe: it is a German cover of Spandau Ballet’s classic Gold. Thereby, Vivien Gold’s version has definitely a stronger flavor of schlager-pop, but also works with some interesting instrumental choices. Tony Hadley, what about a German-English duet of this song? Even if I typically do not like these German lyric-schlager cover versions, I enjoy this song.

6. Herzensmensch

Herzensmensch (“Persons of one’s heart” roughly) kicks off a set of five previously unreleased songs. The song is rather feeling like an emotional ballad, especially in its first half. It is, however, not about love, but a long-lasting friendship Vivien Gold is indeed having in her real life. A nice way to say thanks and to praise friendship..

7. Löwenherz

Löwenherz is a song which comes with a similar style. The song is encouraging to stay strong – “With your lion heart, you can heal the hardest pain” is one of the verses of the song. Weil Du ein Wunder bist (“Because you are a miracle”) – Vivien Gold is sending an intense and uplifting message here.

8. Doppelleben

The message of Doppelleben (“Double Life”) is a bit similar to the one of Der Fremde. It is about trying to have an affair and how much it boosts your personal life. Everyday life has just become more thrilling and interesting. While the stanzas are rather emotional and thoughtful, the song strikes with the very present chorus.

9. Puppenspieler

Puppenspieler is an easy and joyful schlager song. However, the song also feels a bit of thin, especially after having the rather deep songs right before. Nonetheless, I feel that people will enjoy partying and dancing to this track.

10. Katz und Maus

“Let’s play Cat and Mouse” is the main theme of the tenth track. The song is more powerful, more present than Puppenspieler and also feels generally more solid than its predecessor. Another track for typical schlager-pop dance vibe fans.

11. Astronaut

The last single release featured on Paradiesvögel is Astronaut. The song is about freedom and enjoy doing whatever you like. There is a certain stereotypical touch in the song, though. However, I cannot prevent somehow sympathizing as well.

12. Rockstars

If you expect some heavy riffs at Rockstars (“Rock Stars”), Vivien Gold is unfortunately giving you some disappointment. The synth-pop song, however, has a nice flow and comes with a catchy melody.

13. Berlin

Paradiesvögel closes with its only real ballad, Berlin. The song is about a lost love. Even though there are some other melodic and atmospheric element, the song is majorly driven by the piano and Vivien’s voice. A nice and emotional finale.

Vivien Gold – Paradiesvögel – My View

I like what Vivien Gold is doing. Even the songs which tend being stereotypical have a n individual touch and don’t feel like mainstream mash. The range of topics is also rather widespread. There could be more absolutely catchy tracks, but I definitely enjoyed this listen.

Favorite Song: Doppelleben
