Flyctory.com Cons

Aiming to have a short trip around my residence Leverkusen, Google Maps attracted me of the Mühlenmuseum Odenthal (“Odenthal Mill Museum”) Despite I am living just a fifteen minutes drive away, I had never heard of it before. I just had to have a look into this place – and definitely did not regret it. Here is my review.

Odenthaler Mühlenmuseum – Location & Admission
Odenthal is a 15,000 inhabitants municipality of the Rhein-Berg region, located East of Leverkusen and Northeast of Cologne. The most prominent part is the borough of Altenberg with the fascinating Altenberg Cathedral and the average German Fairy Forest. The Mill Museum is located at the Mühlenweg (“Mill Way”) in the North of Central Odenthal. It is a rather narrow path, there are also no signs to the museum, which is located in a small village-alike settlement. The road is a dead end for cars, but very popular among hikers and cyclists. If you take the bus, multiple bus lines stop at Odenthal Kirche, from where it is roughly a ten minute walk. There are just few parking lots in the village, so that it might make sense to park in Odenthal and take the short walk.
The official opening times of the museum are 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and until 18:00 on the weekend. However, the museum feels having a rather relaxed policy, the doors were open during my visit. A sign asks visitors for a 1 EUR admission, there are two boxes to put them in and potentially add a donation.

Odenthaler Mühlenmuseum – The Visit
The museum is located in a large hut next to the historic buildings. There are two major rooms which feature scale models of different types of mills. The models have been built by Günter Blömer, who built the models by himself. The museum is a private initiative and is non-commercial. Each model is coming with quite extensive documentation (in German only). It is even more fascinating that the models are all still fully functional and could illustrate how the mills are in fact working. Obviously, you are asked not to touch (or even run) the exhibits. These also include rather unique and special kinds of mills. During my visit, I had a quite long chat with Mr Blömer about ship mills. They are built like ships, floated on the river, but were fixed, so that you could make use of the hydropower of a flowing river. Over 20,000 of those operated on the River Rhine only during the Middle Ages.

However, the museum has much more exhibits than the mills only. For example, you learn about the mill, which used to operate at the creek passing by and the founder of the museum and his mission. There are also models of horse carriages and other items. Some of those also illustrate the history of the region. Unfortunately, the Odenthal Mill Museum is not supported by the municipality, so that very likely, the exhibits will steadily move to other locations and the museum might even have to close.

Outdoor Exhibits
Close to the small parking lot, there is also a small outdoor exhibit, which illustrates the operation of the original mill at that place. The building does still exist, but is private property. Again, a model illustrates, how the place used to work technically.

Odenthaler Mühlenmuseum – Services
You can buy the museum guide (2 Euro), but there is obviously no gift shop or other service. If you happen to run into Günter Blömer, this is worth much more than any posh service. It is absolutely to chat with him about his experience and the exhibits.
Odenthaler Mühlenmuseum – My View
During the chat I had with Günter Blömer, he stated that not only the communal support, but also the support and appreciation by visitors feels to fade significantly. This is an absolute shame. The Odenthal Mill Museum is an absolute gem and a unique museum. Despite it is small in size, it is very educating. If you are even as lucky as I was and run into the founder, you will have an outstanding time. Additionally, I loved the very relaxed atmosphere.
