Views from the Terrace of Galeries Lafayette

When it comes to spectacular views over Paris, you typically think of Tour Montparnasse or the Eiffel Tower. However, the French capital offers a couple of other options as well. One of them – which is even free admission – is the terrace of Galeries Lafayette, sometimes also referred to as Galeries Lafayette Haussmann Rooftop. I take you there in my Pictured Story.

Galeries Lafayette – Location & Times

Haussmann Galeries Lafayette is likely one of the most well-known and best reputed department stores in Paris. It consists of multiple buildings along Boulevard Haussmann and is not only known for its posh fashion options, but also its iconic architecture. The dome of Galeries Lafayette you see on the pictures above is definitely one of these pieces. The closest you get there by public transport is the metro station Chaussee d’Antin – La Fayette, served by lines 7 and 9. It is practically right in front of the store. The metro station Opera might also be a good option, served by lines 3, 7, and 8.

The terrace is located on the 8th floor of the main store. You get up there by elevator or escalator through Galeries Lafayette. Admission is free. Times are in line with store opening, 10:00 to 20:30 (11:00 to 20:00 on Sundays). However, these may vary by season. Admission to the terrace is free.

Views from Galeries Lafayette Terrace

The terrace is a typical rooftop place. However, there are some services around, which make it really enjoyable to hang out. If you are really lucky, you may even get one of the seats or loungers. However, many people just sit on the stairs and enjoy the view. The view is really amazing, especially in the Southern direction. The most catching building is the opera house Palais Garnier, which is more of less opposite of Galeries Lafayette. As you see on the pictures below, you also have a nice view of other key attractions of the city, like the Eiffel Tower. You are also close to the dome of the department store, which you see from outside.

You got a great view and it is free – this does nowadays come with a downside: the place may be very crowded. We went there on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games‘ opening day. However, especially during sunset hours, the rooftop is packed. You should not be bothered about some reckless people spending ages getting the right shot or video for their social media feeds. On the other hand, the rooftop has some pop-up stores and a bar. The price level is, as expected, not on the lowest level, but people love to have a cocktail and explore the scenery. If you like to visit the bar on the terrace, you should definitely reserve a table beforehand.
