There are still a bunch of reviews left from our Easter 2023 trip to Dubrovnik in Croatia. Right inside the impressing historic city walls, there is the Dubrovnik Maritime Museum. Let’s take you there on my review.
Dubrovnik Maritime Museum – Location & Admission
The museum is located on the very East of the historic city. It is very close to the city wall and can thus be easily combined with this impressing walk. However, the museum entrance is a bit of hidden, you might easily miss the entrance to the Pomorski Muzej, how it is named in Croatian. The Dubrovnik Aquarium is close to this place.
Adult admission to the Dubrovnik Maritime Museum is 10 Euro. It is, however, recommended to buy the Dubrovnik Pass, which features all city museums and the walk of the city wall as well as public transport. The one day pass is 25 EUR, there are also three day passes (45 EUR) and seven day passes (55 EUR) for a more relaxed visit. The prices are based on summer times, winter tickets are cheaper (20 EUR each). Summer opening times of the Maritime Museum is 9:00 to 18:00, with a closure on Wednesdays. In winter, doors close two hours earlier.
Dubrovnik Maritime Museum – The Visit
The exhibition at Dubrovnik Maritime Museum spreads over two floors. You can roughly say that the upper level feature the more recent maritime history of the town and the region. The exhibition is documented in Croatian and English. It is not overwhelmingly large, but comes with quite a lot of maps, documents, ship models and original items. Thereby, there is a mixture of a permanent and temporary exhibitions. The first part of the museum is quite interesting, as it illustrates the importance of Dubrovnik as a trade port and the trade routes which have historically been covered from there.
However, some of the items in displays feel a bit of random. This does not mean that they do not represent the topic, but it is rather a bit of hard to follow the links in the exhibition. That’s quite a shame, as the collection of the Dubrovnik Maritime Museum is rather rich. As you see in the pictures below, especially the presentation on the upper floor is really beautiful. Visiting time was some 30 to 40 minutes.
Dubrovnik Maritime Museum – Services
There is a small gift shop at the reception right at the entrance. The staff did not feel being really motivated to help or to present their exhibition.
Dubrovnik Maritime Museum – My View
The Dubrovnik Maritime Museum does not reach its potential. However, if you are interested in the topic, you might have a good time there. If they improve the presentation and also give more guidance, this could really be a good place. At my visit, it was at most a nice add-on to the Dubrovnik Pass.
