  • Some qualitative gaps

I love running into new names and artist, not only in country music. Checking for new releases as of 23rd May 2025, I had a brief listen to Over The Western Ridge. It is the debut EP by Nathan Applegate, a US-American country artist. I went for a more intense thought about this release.

Nathan Applegate – About The Artist

Nathan Applegate is a US-American country artist, who is originally from Hollister in Missouri. The small town is quite in the middle of the triangle formed by Kansas City, Oklahoma City and Memphis, located in the Ozark Mountains. He already released a song about an Ozark Mountain Night in 2024. His debut single, Jump The Line, is dated as of 2022, though.

Nathan Applegate – Over The Western Ridge – Track by Track

The five song EP lasts 18 minutes. Remarkably, all songs on the EP are previously unreleased..

1. Been There, Miss That

The opener is a modern country song with pop attitudes. The vocals don’t always feel to be absolutely precise, which on the one hand leads to a very personal touch, but on the other hand suggests that the song does not meet its potential. In fact, it is a really good one.

2. Podunkville

The style of Podunkville is a bit more traditional. It feels like a cool one for a country music bar or club. It comes with really nice and catching vibes, which makes you move to the rhythm of the song. In later parts of the track, the song has a nice ease. I like it.

3. Chasing My Next You

The third song of Over The Western Ridge is slower and more emotional. In fact, it describes the situation after a breakup – with a some hope to have a better time next time. In this song, the vocal style of Applegate feels to fit perfectly. It nicely underlines a certain melancholy.

4. Outback

The guitars are opening for Outback. I feel that the straight style of Nathan Applegate’s performance has a nice touch. The song is a modern, rocking track with a cool vibe. I feel it is a cool track for a country music party – or, even better, for being performed live on stage. Unfortunately, the catch of the beginning and the chorus is slightly fading in some later parts of the listen.

5. Dreams That Find You

The best dreams are the ones that find you – these lines from the chorus already illustrate with what the closing song is dealing. The song is thereby quite energetic and full of emotions and presence. Thus, the EP has a really nice farewell.

Nathan Applegate – Over The Western Ridge – My View

Nathan Applegate is a really interesting artist. I really love that he is presenting five new songs in his debut EP. Over The Western Ridge does illustrate his potential, but also the steps he still needs to take. That’s absolutely fine in this stage of his career.

Favorite Song: Outback
