Reviving somewhat the same route we took ten years ago, when my wife and I married in Las Vegas – that was a about the itinerary we planned in late December 2023 and early January 2024. The first stop of this trip was San Diego – a place which we definitely put too little focus on in 2013. As we wanted to have a kitchen for the Christmas holidays, we opted for the Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport – Liberty Station. Here is the hotel review, based on a three night stay.

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport – Location

The hotel is located West of the city center, close to San Diego Airport (SAN). The area around features some facilities by the US Navy. There is also a memorial of a battleship right next to the hotel. Most of the area around the hotel is residential, in closer proximity, there are some basic restaurants. A bit further away, there is a nice mall area named Liberty Station. The hotel is just about four miles away from SeaWorld San Diego, which makes it to a rather popular overnight for families. The hotel consists of two residential buildings, a Northern and a Southern one. The reception and key facilities are located in a central building.

There is even a bus connection to the area, but typically, you will go to this Hilton Group outlet by car. There is a large parking lot in front of the hotel. Unfortunately, the daily parking fee is 19 USD, which feels too much to me (from a European perspective, it is even close to a rip-off).

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport – Room

My wife and I booked a One King One Bedroom Suite at the Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport – Liberty Station. The non-refundable rate was 574.90 USD, including tax. The suite was located in the Southern building. It was really nice in regards of size and equipment. The kitchen comes with two cook tops and a microwave oven, but no conventional oven. The area was absolutely fine to do some proper cooking. The fridge is even larger than the one I use at home. You also had all basic kitchen equipment you need. However, the  kitchen area also showed a lot of scars, the wheels under the lunch and work table were broken as well – people just treat hotel rooms too poorly.

The living room and kitchen also featured a nice and cozy sofa. The TV set felt a bit of hidden in the corner of the room

The one bedroom suite came with a separate bedroom. The room was a bit of narrow, especially for the person sleeping next to the window and thus away from the ensuite bathroom. You tended to touch the second TV set mounted on the wall or hitting yourself somewhere. In contrast to the bedroom, the bathroom area felt spacey and comfortable again and came with amenities with dispensers.

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport – Breakfast

I would typically expect a Homewood Suites hotel coming with a slightly improved version of a Hampton Inn breakfast. The San Diego hotel definitely exceeded my expectations in that regard. There was always a variety of warm dishes, several kinds of fresh fruits and bagels and other nice breakfast items. Overall, the organization of the breakfast was very good – I sometimes felt having a second toaster would lead to a more relaxing morning experience, though. Even in December, you could also have your breakfast on the terrace, which is definitely a nice thing as well.

Homewood Suites also features regular social evenings, which are nothing but a light dinner snack. This place does it only once a week, so that we missed it during our stay.

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport – Service

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport comes with a couple of sports and recreational facilities. For example, there is a typical North American sized outdoor pool with a hot tub next to it. The hotel also drives a basketball court and a barbecue area. The Southern building, where we stayed it, also has a lovely terrace on the third floor, which offers some really nice views. Last, but not least, there is a gym in each of the buildings. We felt that it is a bit of small, regarding the capacity of the buildings.

Check-in and check-out at the Homewood Suites worked very smoothly and was very friendly. I have been welcomed as a Hilton Honors Diamond guests. The speed of the WiFi was excellent.

Homewood Suites San Diego Airport – My View

The Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport – Liberty Station was definitely a great place to stay. The two negative points are the maintenance / state of some kitchen furniture and the too high parking fee. The latter point, of course, you know when you book the hotel already. Overall, the hotel gave us a very good stay in December 2023.
