  • Some slightly weaker tracks

With three albums and two EPs so far, the band Dorothy and their prominent lead singer are looking back to quite some band history already. Three years after their last album, they shared The Way on 14th March 2025. I had a listen.

Dorothy – About the Artist

Dorothy is an US-American hard rock and blues rock band. The band is named after her lead singer Dorothy Martin, who has co-founded the band in Los Angeles in 2014. All other band members have been changed or went on a hiatus in between. Namely, they are Sam Bam Koltun (guitar), Eliot Lorango (bass) and Jake Hayden (drums). Two years after the band has been formed, they released their debut album Rockisdead. There have been two additional albums, 28 Days in the Valley (2018) and the April 2022 release Gifts from the Holy Ghost. That album also contains the lead single Rest in Peace, which has been Dorothy’s first single to make it to the Top 3 of the US Mainstream Rock charts.

Dorothy – The Way – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 37 minutes.

1. I Come Alive

I come alive
When I’m looking at death right in the eye
I stare it down, I stare it down down down
I come alive when I’m laughing at the other side
I adrenalize when its do-or-die
I come alive

The opening track of Dorothy’s album starts slow, with some keyboard sounds and the voice of the band’s lead singer. However, after a bit more than a minute, the hard rock heart of the Californians is unstoppable and pushes the energy of the song to a higher level. Especially the smashing riffs and the catching vocal performance feel promising.

2. The Devil I Know

Yeah, you might spot some bluesy themes and ideas in here, the video teaser definitely suggests more Americana elements than The Devil I Know finally offers. However, if you like straight rock with a hard rock attitude, the second track of the album is just right to you. The song comes with a nice and straight hook and easily catches the listener.

3. Mud

Out of the four feature singles, Mud has by far been the most successful track. The track feels very modern. There are some industrial elements, but the stanzas also have a touch of a hip hop vibes. Dorothy create a lovely groove in here as well. Overall, a really good listen.

4. Tombstone Town (feat. Slash)

Tombstone has been the last single release before the album release. It features Slash – what’s a better proof to say that you made it in the world of rock music? This song has much stronger blues and even country music vibes. TIt is driven by the speedy beat produced by Jake Hayden. I really like it.

5. Bones

Bones opens the set of six so far unreleased songs. This one starts slower, but creates a nice atmosphere from the very beginning, majorly driven by Dorothy Martin and Sam Bam Koltun. The chorus is rather simple so that the dark sound of the track stays a really nice option to enjoy the energy of the band.

6. Unholy Water

Unholy Water continues with the style some songs before already had. The sound is a hard classic rock one. Nonetheless, the song feels modern and comes with a lot of drive and energy. Even though the song might not add that many new ideas, it is made to bang your head to.

I’ve been baptized in unholy water
I’ve been crucified for my beliefs
I lay my sins down at the alter
I ain’t going down you ain’t gonna drown me
In your unholy water

7. Haunted House

There are a few spots on the album in which the blues influence on Dorothy becomes a bit more obvious. One of them is Haunted House, which comes with a really nice and catching groove. Don’t expect any blues depression or a slower song though. Dorothy long for energy and push the songs deeply into the hard rock sphere

8. Puttin’ Out The Fire

The eighth song on The Way is Puttin’ Out The Fire. After some introducing riffs, the song goes a comparably gentle route. The chorus has the characteristic energy of a Dorothy track, though. Nonetheless, this one rather is in the rock sphere compared to the (mostly) harder rocking ones on this record.

9. Superhuman

Superhuman goes for a marching, groovy sound from the very beginning. This song is one of the They Way ones which produces the darkest atmosphere. The demons are laughing at me but hell is a liar – this lyrics excerpt characterizes the song very well. The blues-hard rock alike chorus is one of the best of the album, though.

Rain down like fire from Heaven
Raised up by Amazing Grace
Standing on top of the mountain
Got me feeling superhuman

I’m flying, I’m rising
I’m bulletproof, never dying
Now you’re giving me the power, gonna use it
Got me feeling superhuman
I’m feeling, I’m feeling
I’m feeling superhuman

10. The Way

And there is the chucker-out of The Way. Dorothy close their 2025 album with its title track. The track starts with the piano and Martin’s voice only. Even though there are more instruments here and there, the song keeps its ballad-alike character. A very strong musical statement at the end of the record.

Dorothy – The Way – My View

There are some slightly weaker songs in the second half of The Way. But overall, this album is full of energy and simply a lot of fun and catching. I really enjoyed listening to the album.

Favorite Song: Superhuman
