Right after I returned from a weekend trip to Norway, my home town Cologne hosted another really interesting country music concert event. 49 Winchester played a show on 21st May 2024 at the venue Die Kantine. They were supported by Drayton Farley. Here is my report of the Sound of Nashville concert.

Die Kantine – About The Venue
Die Kantine is a some 900 people capacity venue in the Northern Cologne borough of Nippes. The same complex hosts an open air stage as well as the smaller Yard Club. Parking is a bit of challenging around Die Kantine, but the tram lines 12 and 15 conveniently take you quite near to it (stop: Wilheim-Sollmann-Strasse). In May 2023, I had a show by Kip Moore in Die Kantine as well.
49 Winchester – About The Artists
The roots of 49 Winchester are in Castlewood, Virginia. They typically blend country music and rock elements. The quintet consists of Isaac Gibson (vocals/guitar), Chase Chafin (bass), Bus Shelton (guitar), Dillon Cridlin (drums) and Noah Patrick (steel guitar). Some of them are friends since childhood years.Their first album release was self-titled in 2014. They have released four albums so far, the last one being Fortune Favors the Bold. In August 2024, they will release the album Leavin’ This Holler.
On their European tour, they were supported by Drayton Farley. After his 2020 album Hargrove & Sweet Southern Sadness – The Early Extended Plays, the Alabama native had two more albums. In 2021, he released A Hard up Life, followed by Twenty on High two years later. His website states that his voice fills the room like cigarette smoke.
49 Winchester – The Show
Drayton Farley opened the stage right in time at about 20:00. His set was about 45 minutes long – and he used that time to win Cologne’s heart, indeed. The emotional highlight was likely when he shared the story behind the song Dream. The song is about doing a job he did not really enjoy and losing two pregnancies with his wife initially – and now, five years later, being a professional musician and father to two daughters. The audience enjoyed his performance, which included other highlights like American Dream (Hard Up) or Evergreen Eyes. After his closing song, Pitchin’ Fits, Farley got a huge applause by the audience.
49 Winchester with a Southern Rock Firework
It took the crew some 25 minutes to set up the stage for 49 Winchester, who played a just about 90 minute set in Cologne. Already with the first songs like Chemistry or Hays,Kansas, they turned Die Kantine into a Southern rock temple. The crowd was partying with the Virginia band almost without an intermission. USA,USA chants were given by the German fans after several songs. The public’s favorite song was likely Russell County Line, which was rather in the middle of the set.
The second half of the show featured songs like Annabel or Damn Darlin’. The set close with the songs Tulsa and Last Call, before 49 Winchester gave a final goodbye with Hillbilly Happy.

49 Winchester – My View
The Sound of Nashville night at Die Kantine was amazing. Drayton Farley was already a really good artist, who gave a thoughtful and intense 45 minute set. 49 Winchester, thereafter, was absolutely amazing. The almost 90 minute rock party was an absolute treat and also underlined that Southern rock and country rock music does have its audience in Germany. By the way, thanks to both acts and Sound of Nashville that I was allowed to cover the whole sets as a photographer.
