Flyctory.com Pros

  • Very nice indie-folk style with country and rock elements
  • Good storytelling
  • Versatile style of songs

Especially their debut EP lead to quite some reputation for the duo The Ocelots. On 7th February 2025, they published their sophomore album Everything, When Said Slowly. I had a listen and share my thoughts.

The Ocelots – About The Artists

The Ocelots is an Irish folkrock duo consisting of the twins Brandon and Ashley Watson. They are originally from Wexford, but nowadays live in Leipzig in Germany. So far, The Ocelots had three major releases. In 2017, they were very successful with their debut EP Till We Get There. Their second EPAddlepated, has been released in 2023. In 2020, the duo shared their debut album Started to Wonder.

The Ocelots – Everything, When Said Slowly – Track by Track

The eleven track album lasts 44 minutes.

1. The Lighthouse

The album starts slowly with gentle and dreaming vibes. The Ocelots take us to The Lighthouse, which especially strikes with lovely storytelling. During its 4:17 minute duration, the track takes a lovely development. A nice opener with interesting melodic elements.

2. About You

About You is one out of three songs, which have been shared before the album release already. Especially in contrast to The Lighthouse, the song feels more rhythmic and also comes with happier vibes on the melodic side. This overall leads to a nice listen with a fine touch of folk-pop.

3. Landlords

The vocals become higher for Landlords, which is overall a finer and fragile song. The rhythm of this track partially leans towards country and Western vibes. The song is not as present as the two tracks before, but has a nice character.

4. Australia

It takes quite a while until the word Australia in fact occurs in the lyrics of this song. The song has a strong rhythmic vibe and a fine melody again, which leads to a rather intimate feeling initially. Which the lyrics It hurts to stick around runaway in Australia, the song gains more and more energy, leading to an interesting plot.

5. Joy Outside

The fifth song of Everything, When Said Slowly is Joy Outside. It nicely links to the energy at the end of Australia. The song has a flavor of progressive rock, especially towards the end of the 4.23 minute listen.

6. The Good of a Bad Year

The last song of the album, which has already been released is The Good of a Bad Year. Again, the composition of the album impresses me. The transition from Joy Outside feels rather fluent and this sixth song develops a new idea out of the album.

7. Front Door Key

Fool To Want You spreads some swinging and jazzy vibes from the very beginning. This also leads to a rather traditional vibe. However, the fine and joyful melody of the song prevents that you feel that the song might be outdated. Overall, this one definitely makes me smile during the listen.

8. Fool To Want You

The traditional touch continues with Front Door Key. Banjos again remind of country music. However, the song also having a psychedelic touch and reflects mental struggle. Due to that, the song is heaver and darker to listen than the ones before.

9. Tunnels

It could take an hour to get to one side of the city
But all the bikes are broken
And the walking wont be pretty
It could take a lifetime to get out of everyday life
And I’m surprised that there’s still sunshine
Surprised that there’s still life
At the end of all these tunnels
That we’re all going through

Tunnels goes for a rather rhythmic country-folk style. The strumming guitars and the present rhythm define the track.

10. Innocence of Love

The two longest songs of Everything, When Said Slowly conclude the album. Innocence of Love is thereby the shorter one with “just” 4:48 minutes. The song again comes with a nice country-folk style and has a nice dramatic plot. Towards the end, the struggle represented in the vocals is a bit too much from my perspective.

11. Invisible Cities

Invisible Cities is the only track which exceeds a duration of five minutes. The first some four minutes are a quiet and fine folk track, coming with some indie elements. Thereafter, the song turns into an instrumental coda.

Those invisible cities I’ve lived in
With no roof under my head
And I’ve lived long enough now
To see light in the shadow
And my face in the frame
Why am I kidding myself?

The Ocelots – Everything, When Said Slowly – My View

The Irish duo takes the listener to a very interesting and versatile trip. Everything, When Said Slowly especially strikes with nice storytelling and picturesque, intimate stories. It is not a very top notch album, but definitely a very good listen.

Favorite Song: Front Door Key
