Julie Adam, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Music Canada, recently stated Lindsay Ell is a one-of-a-kind human, and a once-in-a-lifetime artist. We are so honoured to partner with her to share her powerful music and message to the world. The wonderful Canadian artist from Calgary is opening a new chapter in her career – not only a new record company, but also a new style. In her Instagram channel she stated her new EP Love Myself that I’ve never felt more like myself. I was so curious to listen to her new five set of songs released on 25th October 2024. Here is my review.
Lindsay Ell – About The Artist
Is it really more than four years ago since Lindsay Ell released her last album, the very personal and amazing Heart Theory? Quite a lot has happened in between to the artist born on 20th March 1989 in Calgary. There have been positive moments, for example that her US-American citizenship has been accepted in 2022 or that she joined Shania Twain’s band as a guitarist for the Las Vegas and tour shows. However, the honest and amazing artist also disclosed weak spots of her life, like that she is battling an eating disorder. There have also been some single releases in between, like Good on You (2021) and Right on Time (2022), which made it to the Canadian Top 10. In early October 2024, she released the feature single of this EP, Story I Tell Myself, and announced Love Myself, her second EP overall. The song lead my Songs of the Week as of 4th October 2024. Lindsay Ell is a Featured Artist of my project. you can learn about her in my August 2022 Spotlight interview.
Lindsay Ell – Love Myself – Track by Track
The five track EP lasts 15 miutes.
1. Story I Tell Myself
I’m so tired of the story I tell myself
Somebody else is more deserving
The lies don’t work when I’m doing well
But it hurts like hell to hear the story I tell myself
Lindsay announced the EP together with this track. What a strong, personal message. The song reminds me of the straight and touching songs of the heart theory album. Even though the sound is now very different, coming with a stomping pop rhythm, it feels like Lindsay Ell. There might be more more than three chords in her new era – but it is still the truth.
2. The Hard Way
The second song on Love Myself is The Hard Way. The song is a bit more gentle than the energetic message the opener is sending out. Nonetheless, the lyrics head into a similar direction, but rather looking back to her process of changing her mind. I’m bruised, not scared to escape, I’m done with faking it. Later, she states At least I know what I’m not, and I’m grateful for what I’ve got, and it feels so good to finally know what I want. Great song with very clear, relatable lyrics.
3. Pain Tolerance
I was a hopeless romantic
Till something inside of me died
Now, I haven’t cried since early 2005
If I got little acknowledgement I wouldn’t need a pretty high pain tolerance. The third song deals with the pain and struggle Lindsay Ell was going through in her career. The sound of the track reminds me of later Taylor Swift recordings. I just like Lindsay’s lyrics better. They simply feel more mature.
4. What Did I Do?
The fourth song describes how Lindsay’s struggle affected her relations to other people and in love. The melodic background is limited, the song focuses on the lyrics and its message. Another piece of really good storytelling, put into modern pop music style.
5. Love Myself
I treat the scale like religion
It’s my skin, but I struggle fitting in it
I swear I’ll figure it out, but
Right now, the learning hurts like hell
The title track is closing the EP. Love Myself is about Lindsay’s struggle accepting herself. Melodically, the song is likely the closest to her former releases. And it is incredibly touching. You reflect it far longer than its three minutes of runtime.

Lindsay Ell – Love Myself – My View
Where is the next plane to Nashville? I feel the urge of simply hugging Lindsay for this very personal release. It is a new style, a new era of her music. But it is still having her heart, her soul. Yeah, it s just a five song EP, but it feels she is exactly sending out the message which was necessary to share. Love Myself is an amazing release by an amazing artist.
