Flyctory.com Pros

  • Very well presented and widespread museum
  • Interesting facts about the Balloon Fiesta
  • Low admission
  • Amazing view from balcony

In my Weird Al Yankovic bubble, the New Mexico city Albuquerque is majorly linked to one of the artist’s most epic songs. However, many people think about one of the city’s most famous (and rather unique) aviation events. The annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is typically held on a week in October, featuring roughly 500 balloons in a total of 14 sessions. The grounds of this famous event also host the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. During my trip in December 2025, I just had to have a visit.

International Balloon Museum – Location & Admission

The museum is located on the very North of Albuquerque. It is on the Southern edge of the wide Fiesta grounds, with a few hotels and restaurants around. Reaching the museum by car is very easy, as it is rather close to the I-25 Interstate.

The Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum is opening daily apart from Mondays. Times are 9:00 to 17:00. Adult admission is 6 USD. On Sundays from 9:00 to 13:00 and the first Friday of each month (excluding Fiesta days), admission to the museum is free.

International Balloon Museum – The Visit

The museum gives a vast overview on ballooning. Obviously, a focus is on the Balloon Fiesta. The exhibition includes the history and development of the event. You also learn about the origin of the participants. Throughout the museum, there are displays and pictures of specially designed balloons all over the place. There are also some interactive displays and games, which also allow younger visitors exploring the museum. Unfortunately, some of them did not work properly during our visit.

Another interesting focus of the museum is the history of ballooning. There are also some historic items and replicas, which lead to a very illustrative presentation. Somehow historic is also the part of the museum which deals with uses of balloons and airships during wars. The exhibition space is not huge, but the museum makes good use of it. Last, but not least, the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum also hosts the Hall of Fame of the International Ballooning federation, FAI CIA.

Rotating Exhibition

Apart from the permanent exhibition, there are also rotating and temporary exhibitions. During our visit, it was about an unprecedented attempt  to reach the North Pole by balloon in the late 19th century. It was also one of the best-presented topics of the entire museum, including interactive displays, or historic explanations and items.

Balcony

When you are the upper floor of the museum, you should definitely also step out on the balcony. The view from there is stunning, overlooking a vast part of the Fiesta grounds. On top of that, you also have a nice view of the mountains, which are especially located East of the building.

International Balloon Museum – Services

The staff at the museum was very friendly and helpful. Close to the entrance, there is a major souvenir store, featuring ballooning and Fiesta souvenirs.

Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum – My View

I absolutely loved the museum. The presentation is good, it focuses on interesting and important aspects. There are some side features like the amazing view from the balcony. Last, but not least, the museum is truly an international museum – something which does not happen that frequently in North American locations. Even though ballooning might be a topic which is not in your focus, I absolutely recommend a visit.
