  • Lovely large park
  • Very interesting greenhouses
  • Lovely place to hang out and relax

The Palmengarten (“Palm Tree Garden”) is one of three botanical gardens in Frankfurt. It is one its key central recreational areas. During a lovely summer day, I visited the German city and hung out with my wife there. Here is my review.

Palmengarten Frankfurt – Location & Admission

The Palmengarten is located rather centrally in Frankfurt, in its Westend borough. While the key entrance is on the North side, the easier one for visitors is the Southern gate. You can reach it by underground train to Bockenheimer Warte. Alternatively, there is also a bus stop, Palmengartenstraße. A key attraction in the area is the Senckenberg Naturmuseum, a famous and amazing natural history museum. Interestingly, one of the other botanical gardens of the city, the Frankfurt Botanical Garden is right Northeast of the Palmengarten. The North side also has a parking garage access.

Tha garden is open daily (apart from Christmas Eye and New Year’s Eve). From March to October, opening times are 9:00 to 19:00. In winter months, gates already close at 16:00. You can stay longer than gate opening, but not longer than 23:00 Adult admission is 9 EUR for adults. In summer months, there is also an After Work Ticket, only available Monday to Friday. after 18:30, for 5 EUR. I would at least allow for a two hour visit – which will still be quite a hurry.

Palmengarten Frankfurt – The Visit

The Palmengarten has been founded in 1871 as a private initiative. It is covering an area of 220k square meters and is nowadays driven by the City of Frankfurt and supported by a supporters club. It is a combination of a park with recreational options as well as a couple of greenhouses and conservatories. There is a lot of information given in signs. The key signs and maps are bilingual, German and English. We entered the park from the South and passed by the large Bootsweiher (“Boat pond”), where you can rent a couple of (non-powered) boats and ships to enjoy the nature at and around the pond – a lovely experience. As you see in the pictures below, concentrating on the outdoor experience first, there are a lot of places worth exploring and strolling around. It s also a great – and popular – place for families. There are a lot of wild-living animals, playgrounds and other facilities for the younger visitors.

Right opposite the main entrance, which also features the museum shop, there is the Haus Rosenbrunn. Between the two buildings, there is the picturesque Rosengarten (“Rose Garden”), which was one of the highlights of the visit to me. Especially during the summer months, when the flowers are fully blooming, it is an amazing visual, but also aromatic experience from the small of all the different roses.

Indoor attractions

There are a couple of greenhouses and larger pavilions in the park. A few ones are used for scientific reasons and not public. In the Northwest corner of the park, there is the Blüten- und Schmetterlingshaus (“Blossom and Butterfly House”), which is likely the most colorful and vibrant part of the Palmengarten. Close to the main entrance, there are the greenhouses of the Tropicarium, split into habitats for the dry and for the more humid tropical zones. We even missed a few of the indoor places during our visit, including the Sub Antarctica Collection. A key part of your visit is the Palmenhaus (“Palm Tree House”), which is located in one of the most eye-catching buildings of the entire park.

Palmengarten Frankfurt – Services

As said, there is a museum shop at the main entrance. Throughout the park, there are numerous cafes and restaurants. Many allow you to enjoy the sun and sit outside. There is even a mini golf course on the very North of the park. There are toilets, including accessible ones, spread throughout the entire park.

Palmengarten Frankfurt – My View

On a sunny day, the Palmengarten is one of Frankfurt’s most beautiful places to hang out and enjoy nature. Especially on the weekend, it may be rather crowded, but it is definitely worth the visit. It’s rather central location not too far from the trade fair makes it also very easy getting there.
