Flyctory.com Pros

  • Fascinating rooms
  • Long visiting times
  • Well-guided tour

The Münchener Residenz (“Munich Residence”) is one of the most iconic places in Munich. From 1508 to 1918, it was home of the dukes, prince-elector and kings of Bavaria. Nowadays, it is one of the most impressing museums of the city. I take you there in my review.

Residence Museum – Location & Admission

The Residenzmuseum is located in Central Munich, close to the Maximilianstraße shopping street. The closest public transport stop is the tram station Marienstraße. Apart from the iconic tram line 19, it is also served by line 21. Alternatively, you can take the underground lines U3, U4, U5, U6 to Odeonsplatz. There are a couple of parking garages in the are.

The museum is opening daily, 9:00 to 18:00. During my visit, the treasury was closed. Nowadays, you can buy the adult admission for the museum for 10 EUR, a combined ticket with the treasury for 15 Euro and a ticket including the treasury and the Cuvilles Theater for 20 EUR.

Residence Museum – The Visit

The museum is offering a long and a short tour. The signs are in German and English. I opted for the long tour, but did not take an audio guide. This is a roughly two hours visit. If you use the audio guide and thus go for more details, you should at least factor a three minute visit (plus the treasury) in your schedule. One of the first places I visited was already one of the Residence Museum’s highlight. The Antiquarium is not only richly decorated with numerous status and paintings, it is also the largest Renaissance hall North of the Alps.

During your visit, you pass several rooms of the residence. The majority of them are richly decorated, so that the visit in the Munich Residence is absolutely fascinating. Other highlights of your visit is the Kaisersaal (“Emperors Hall”) and the Hofkapelle (“Aulic Chapel”).

A Visit Full of Highlights

However, you have to state that most of the rooms of the Residence Museum are impressing. From the Paradeschlafzimmer (“Parade Sleeping Room”) to the Audienzzimmer (“Audience Room”), the design of the rooms and their decoration is outstanding. During final part of the visit, you also learn a bit about everyday’s life in the Munich Residence.

Residence Museum – Services

At the reception desk, there is also a very nice souvenir store. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Residence Museum – My View

The Residence Museum is one of the most iconic places to me. To me, it even beats more popular Bavarian location like Neuschwanstein Castle in regards of the quality of your visit. You at least spend two hours there, the rooms are fascinating – and the atmosphere is significantly less stressful than in other places (even though it can be really packed there as well). I absolutely recommend a visit.
