Supporting the Faroe Islands at the EHF Women Handball Euro 2024 in Basel, Switzerland, made me look for a stay in the city for two nights. The location rather close to the train station and not too far from the venue made me go for an Accor Hotel choice. Here is my review of the ibis Styles Basel City, based on a two night stay in December 2024.
ibis Styles Basel City – Location
The hotel is located North of the tracks of Basel SBB main rail station. I had a room facing the tracks, but the sound insulation was good and this did not disturb at all. The area is mainly a mixture of commercial and residential. There are unfortunately not too many services which are relevant for travelers (like grocery stores or restaurants) in close proximity. You do reach these kind of offers within a ten minutes walk, though. Accor Hotels runs two other hotels in the neighborhood, the ibis budget Basel City and the Novotel Basel City (which are located in the same complex).
The walking distance to Basel SBB station is about 15 minutes. This area naturally offers a nice range of services as well. The grocery stores also have extended opening hours there, which is very handy. There is also a bus station in front of the hotel, Grosspeteranlage, which is offering good connections in peak times. A nice feature for the handball event was the ten minute walk to the tram station Karl Barth-Platz. It features a direct connection to the St. Jakobshalle. You can also park your car in a garage, in case if you drive to Basel.
ibis Styles Basel City – Room
I had two nights at the ibis Styles Basel City in December 2024, Monday to Wednesday. The standard queen room was booked on a flexible, non-public rate. ibis Styles stays always include breakfast. At first sight, the room had a quite nice design. A key issue was the diagonally shaped “work desk” at the wall, though. Finally, you could only use the wider, very large part. This was – unfortunately – also the location of the only power outlet you could use around (and thus took additional space). In general, the distribution of power outlets in the room has been a nightmare. This was quite unfortunate, as the size of the room was actually really fine for a city trip with limited luggage.
The bathroom came with a nice size and very well-sized shower. The toilet was located right next to it. It might look a bit of narrow on the pictures, but overall, the layout of the bathroom was nice. The room was very well-maintained, felt modern and was absolutely clean.
ibis Styles Basel City – Breakfast
I could not enjoy breakfast on the second morning due to a very early train connection to Cologne. On the first morning, though, I really enjoyed it. The ibis Styles Basel City has a nice and large breakfast room and offers a nice range of cold and warm items. There are also quite some healthy options. The staff felt very attentive. Despite there were quite some people in the breakfast room, there were rarely refilling issues during my meal.
ibis Styles Basel City – Service
Check-in and check-out was very friendly. The hotel WiFi worked fine. The hotel does not drive a gym or a similar facility.
ibis Styles Basel City – My View
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay at the ibis Styles Basel City. The room was a bit on the small side, but it is a good basis for a city trip. However, you nowadays need to allow people to work, check mails etc. The design of the work desk and the positions of the power outlets is an absolute fail. The location is not ideal, but reasonable. Thus, the hotel does not reach the highest ratings.
