The December 2023-opened Sandoyartunnilin (Sandoy Tunnel) allowed me to visit the Southern island of Sandoy on the Faroe Islands. Apart from the tunnel experience I shared with you already, I was of course flattered to explore the island. I also had one night on Sandoy, at the Molin Guesthouse in Skalavik. Here is the review of my experience.
Molin Guesthouse – Location
Skalavik is a some 180 people town on the East of Sandur. The guesthouse is located right at the harbor of the city. The owner of the guesthouse is also driving a cafe, where the check-in is done and breakfast is served. The village is a rather picturesque place with a prominent church and a good spot for hikes on the island, but it does not feature any museums or restaurants. A grocery store, gas stations, restaurants and some museums can be found in Sandur, which is a some ten kilometer drive away
The easiest way to reach Skalavik is by car. However, the tunnel also allows you to take the bus from Torshavn to Sandur and transfer there to the bus on Sandur (line 601), which features Dalur, Husavik and Skalavik.
Molin Guesthouse – Room
I had a Deluxe Double Room at the Molin Guesthouse for one night in September 2024, Thursday to Friday. The non-refundable rate for the room was 1,198 DKK, roughly 160 Euro, and included breakfast. The rooms are all in a separate building with a large window front, which also features the entrance door. There is a nice sofa and table area and some storage in the living and sleeping space. Unfortunately, there is no proper layout to work of have a bite. The table is simply too low for that. I found a way to do my Friday morning Flyctory.com work in the room, though.
The bathroom is located in the rear of the room, separated by a door. The bathroom felt absolutely spacious and comfortable. Basic amenities were given in dispensers. The room was nicely maintained and felt rather recently renovated. It was also clean. However, the housekeeping forgot an (empty) red wine bottle next to the entrance door.
Molin Guesthouse – Breakfast
Molin Guesthouse has very good reviews on their breakfast. However, it is served from 9:00 and I had a really packed Friday, so that I had to leave early. The host of the guesthouse provided me with a lovely sandwich, some fruit and a chocolate instead, which was a nice alternative.
Molin Guesthouse – Service
The host was very friendly. We agreed on my time of arrival and she was there in time. I would have loved to have some sort of “information brochure” in the room. For example, I had to ask for he WiFi passport when she brought me the sandwich. Apart from that, communication was absolutely easy and relaxed. The WiFi connection was absolutely remarkable. (50 Mbit downstream, 10 Mbit upstream), especially when you remind the location of the guesthouse.
Molin Guesthouse – My View
I really liked my night at Molin Guesthouse. The scenery is beautiful and the host was very welcoming. There have been some minor service issues I mentioned, unfortunately. Nonetheless, it is a great place for staying in Sandoy. You have to factor in that the faciilities in Skalavik are limited.
