Flyctory.com Pros

  • Five very nice songs
  • Intimate and very personal acoustic style

Bad Temper Joe is one of the finest German blues artists. I have covered his releases twice already, One Can Wreck It All in 2021 and Glitter & Blues in 2022. Both releases had good reviews from my side. On 5th July 2024, he is sharing a new EP (in order to shorten the waiting time to the upcoming album, as it is stated on his website). Here is my review of At the Villa.

Bad Temper Joe – About The Artist

Bad Temper Joe is an artist from Bielefeld. He has quite some international reputation as well. For example, he won the Memphis International Blues Challenge in 2020. Most of his recordings re using the slide guitar, but there are also songs using the harmonica or electric guitar. He released eight albums so far, including the two latest ones mentioned in the beginning of the post. The acoustic recording At The Villa is his third EP overall.

Bad Temper Joe – At The Villa – Track by Track

The five track EP lasts 23 minutes.

1. If Her Hair Ain’t Longer Than Mine

In the first song, Bad Temper Joe shares his preferences about ladies. I don’t want a woman if her hair ain’t longer than mine. With the hair cut of the artist, this is a bit of a limitation. On the musical side, the song is not limited at all. The acoustic style works great and the song is a lovely, typical Bad Temper Joe listen. Cool!

2. Reinventing the Blues

In the longest song of the EP, Bad Temper Joe is doing nothing but Reinventing the Blues. The guitar play is very virtuous and melodic, the smoky sound of the German artists‘ voice adds sufficient bluesy and groovy touch to the listen. The style of the recording almost feels like live recording. Bad Temper Joe si simply very reliable.

3. Berlin, Springtime Rain

The last three songs of At the Villa have already been shared on YouTube and streaming platforms. Berlin, Springtime Rain comes with beautiful storytelling and a lot of emotions. The song leans a bit towards country and typical singer-songwriter style.

4. Bad Name

Already the first chords of Bad Name give a much more blues-alike touch again. The song is a bit “rougher” again as well. This adds a nice touch to the set of songs presented on the EP.

5. Man for the Road

The EP closes with Man for the Road. The slow song is adding a lot of feelings and emotions. I’m a man for the road – Bad Temper Joe will be on tour quite a lot the next months, including multiple appearances on cruise ships. I guess the passengers will value this one when the German is on stage.

Bad Temper Joe – At The Villa – My View

I really enjoyed listening to At The Villa by Bad Temper Joe. The five songs are well-balanced, all coming with a different style. The intimate style acoustic recording adds a lot of nice flavor. This one is really worth listening to.
